The Middle Class Tax Refund provided up to $1,050 to millions of Californians in 2022.

While many saw their money deposited directly into their bank accounts, around 9.6 million residents were sent debit cards with the cash loaded on them. However, four years on, there are roughly 4.5 million recipients who still have funds on their card and around 960,000 have never even activated their card.

In total there is still about $400 million that has gone unclaimed and time is quickly running out to do so. Come April 30, 2026, any money that is left on those debit cards will go back into the state coffers.

How to claim the inflation relief cash

First and foremost, you have to locate the debit card the state Franchise Tax Board sent to you. Since it has remained inactive for all this time, you may find that the debit card has been deactivated. Don’t hold your breath expecting to talk to a person, the line is completely automated David Kennedy told the outlet. It’s recommended that you follow the prompts to get your card activated.

If you are still having difficulties, 7 On Your Side says to give them a call and they’ll do what they can to help you get the money you have coming to you.
