The 32-year-old teen-pop survivor headlined Coachella on Saturday night, and for roughly half an hour in the middle of his set, what Bieber did was sit behind a laptop and sing along to his old music videos \u2014 often an octave down from where he recorded them \u2014 as he searched up the songs on YouTube and played them over the festival\u2019s state-of-the-art sound system.<\/p>\n

Expectations were insanely high for this show \u2014 Bieber\u2019s first large-scale concert after a few years he spent in the pop-star wilderness recovering from various health ailments of both the physical and mental variety.<\/p>\n
Invite-only warm-up gigs he played over the last couple of weeks in L.A. led to widespread speculation that at Coachella he might play only material from last year\u2019s \u201cSwag<\/a>\u201d and \u201cSwag II\u201d comeback albums.<\/p>\n And indeed that\u2019s what he did for the first half-hour or so, singing songs like \u201cAll I Can Take,\u201d \u201cSpeed Demon\u201d and \u201cButterflies\u201d \u2014 and singing them with extreme precision \u2014 accompanied by prerecorded backing tracks; after that, he brought out Carter Lang<\/a> and Dylan Wiggins \u2014 two of his closest \u201cSwag\u201d collaborators \u2014 to do more of the \u201cSwag\u201d material \u201cup close and personal with you guys,\u201d as he put it.<\/p>\n \u201cThis is a night I dreamed about for a long time,\u201d he said, dressed in a red hoodie, shorts and Paddington-gone-Balenciaga rain boots.<\/p>\n Together the three did gorgeous Christian-youth-group white-soul renditions of \u201cThings You Do\u201d and \u201cGlory\u201d and \u201cEverything Hallelujah,\u201d the last of which Bieber used to shout out his wife, Hailey Baldwin, who was in the crowd and made herself available to Coachella\u2019s roving cameras.<\/p>\n Then: \u201cFeels like we gotta take you guys on a bit of a journey,\u201d Bieber said. \u201cYou guys remember this song?\u201d<\/p>\n
