As the Sacramento Kings shift into offseason mode, franchise legend Jerry Reynolds offered his candid perspective on a frustrating season, the NBA\u2019s recent scrutiny, and what comes next for the organization.<\/p>\n

During an interview with Sactown Sports\u2019 The Drive Guys<\/a>, Reynolds didn\u2019t hold back when discussing the league\u2019s investigation into the Kings following accusations of tanking<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cWell, that just kind of shows you what little they have to do,\u201d he said bluntly. While acknowledging a late-game mistake, he dismissed any larger narrative.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Kings kind of screwed up, but it wasn\u2019t an attempt to tanking. They just forgot the situation. That stuff happens.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also brushed aside outside criticism, adding that the moment \u201cwouldn\u2019t rank very high\u201d on the list of issues from this season and calling the controversy \u201cmeaningless.\u201d<\/p>\n

Looking at the bigger picture, Reynolds believes the NBA\u2019s increased focus on tanking is tied to a league-wide trend. \u201c<\/p>\n

I think more teams have been positioning themselves for longer than I can ever remember,\u201d he explained. \u201cAnd I think that\u2019s kind of brought it on.\u201d<\/p>\n

He even suggested Sacramento has been unfairly lumped in with teams like Utah, Memphis, Brooklyn, and Washington, noting, \u201cThe Kings, I think, [are] the most innocent of the group. They\u2019ve actually been playing pretty good, winning basketball here late.\u201d<\/p>\n

One of the few bright spots this season has been veteran wing DeMar DeRozan, whom Reynolds praised emphatically.<\/p>\n

\u201cYeah, 1,000%. I mean, DeMar\u2019s been exactly who we thought he would be,\u201d he said. \u201cJust a pro\u2019s pro.\u201d<\/p>\n

Reynolds highlighted DeRozan\u2019s consistency and professionalism amid organizational instability, adding, \u201cI don\u2019t know how anybody could have handled it any better.\u201d<\/p>\n

As the Sacramento Kings prepare for exit interviews, Reynolds emphasized the importance of clarity in roster decisions heading into an offseason that could see widespread changes.<\/p>\n

\u201cTrying to make sure they have a clear idea of who really should be in the plans for next year\u2014that\u2019s kind of number one,\u201d he said. He acknowledged the difficulty of those conversations, noting they will likely involve \u201csome probably hurt feelings.\u201d<\/p>\n

When it comes to the draft, Reynolds struck a realistic tone. While fans often hope for a franchise-changing star, he pointed out that simply landing a solid contributor has value.<\/p>\n

Referencing former Sacramento Kings guard Kenny Smith, he said, \u201cExcellent player, but the problem with the Kings, we had a bunch of third and fourth guys.\u201d<\/p>\n

The goal now, he suggested, is balance: \u201cA really good rookie that can start right away and help you get better\u2014that would be a good pick.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ultimately, Reynolds believes evaluation is a blend of data and instinct. \u201cYou have to have scouts that you trust\u2026 and then ultimately it comes down to the decision maker,\u201d he explained. \u201cYou got to take all that information, and sometimes there\u2019s a little bit of a feel to it.\u201d<\/p>\n
