SAN JOSE \u2013 The San Jose Sharks<\/a> are giving one of their prospects on defense<\/a> another look at the NHL level as they get set to wind down the regular season.<\/p>\n

On their way to missing the playoffs for a seventh straight year, the Sharks on Sunday recalled top-scoring defenseman Luca Cagnoni<\/a> from the Barracuda of the AHL in what could be an early audition for next season.<\/p>\n

Cagnoni, now in his second year as a professional, is 10th among all AHL defensemen in scoring this season with eight goals and 35 assists in 67 games with the Barracuda, who have already clinched a spot in the Calder Cup playoffs.<\/p>\n

Cagnoni, a left-shot defenseman, had two assists and averaged 17:39 in ice time in six games with the Sharks late last season. He was also recalled by the Sharks in mid-October, but did not play in a game.<\/p>\n

The Sharks, as of now, have several holes to fill on their defense corps this summer, as just two blueliners, Dmitry Orlov and Sam Dickinson, are signed past this season,<\/a> with Mario Ferraro, Nick Leddy, John Klingberg, and Vincent Desharnais all pending unrestricted free agents. Shakir Mukhamadullin is a restricted free agent with arbitration rights.<\/p>\n

Cagnoni, 21, was taken by the Sharks in the fourth round of the 2023 NHL Draft. Following a stellar junior career<\/a> with the Portland Winterhawks, where he had 193 points in 205 games, the 5-foot-9, 180-pound Cagnoni turned pro last season and had 52 points in 64 games with the Barracuda.<\/p>\n

The Sharks (37-34-8) have lost three straight games and would be eliminated from playoff contention with a loss in any fashion Monday when they face the Nashville Predators at Bridgestone Arena.<\/p>\n

The Sharks, with 82 points, trail the Los Angeles Kings for the final wild-card spot in the Western Conference by five points, and the Predators by four points.
