Hong\/Associated Press<\/p>\n<p>SAN DIEGO \u2014 The California Republican Party deadlocked Sunday on whom to endorse for governor as neither candidate received enough support to secure the party\u2019s nod, with the party\u2019s most ardent grassroots supporters rejecting President Donald Trump\u2019s\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/politics\/joegarofoli\/article\/trump-california-governor-22201498.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">favored candidate<\/a> and threatening to splinter the party when it is the closest it has\u00a0 been in decades to winning the governor\u2019s mansion.<\/p>\n<p>Neither Fox News commentator Steve Hilton nor Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco received the required 60% support of the 1,101 delegates gathered for the three-day California party convention that ended Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have two amazing candidates,\u201d GOP chair Corrin Rankin said after the votes were tabulated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Republican National Committee member Shawn Steel said that receiving the party\u2019s imprimatur \u201cis always important because it\u2019s a way to tip the scales to the state\u2019s 5.8 million Republicans.\u201d The party\u2019s endorsement appears on communications to party members and can sway wobbly or underinformed conservative voters.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bianco disagreed, saying Sunday the deadlocked vote \u201cdidn\u2019t mean anything. Hong\/Associated Press<\/p>\n<p>Hilton and\u00a0Bianco top most polls as Democrats remain stuck in gear with its eight candidates splitting the vote and allegations of sexual misconduct against the top polling Democrat, Rep. Eric Swalwell, becoming an unwanted focus of the campaign just weeks before Californians receive their ballot. California has not elected a Republican governor since Arnold Schwarzenegger in 2006.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Sunday\u2019s vote also reflected how little the party\u2019s most devout members thought of Trump\u2019s endorsement this month of Hilton, who is leading most polls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bianco supporter Christine LaMarca of San Diego said that while she is MAGA and supports the president, \u201chis endorsement may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/politics\/joegarofoli\/article\/trump-california-governor-22201498.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">not be a good thing<\/a> in California,\u201d where two-thirds of voters oppose him. \u201cIt will matter to MAGA people, but not so much to others.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Republican National Committee member Shawn Steel said that receiving the party\u2019s imprimatur \u2018is always important because it\u2019s a way to tip the scales to the state\u2019s 5.8 million Republicans.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>State Sen. He promised to eliminate the California Environmental Quality Act, the California Coastal Commission, the California Air Resources Board and sanctuary city protections for undocumented immigrants.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Bianco said Friday that he voted for Trump three times, but \u201cas much as I love our president, he proved that he makes bad decisions too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bianco\u2019s supporters were vocal throughout the convention, with many sporting cowboy hats. Bianco\u2019s Western-themed party Saturday night featured an area where supporters could take photos with calves.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Hilton\u2019s convention party didn\u2019t feature any livestock, but the Atherton resident mentioned Trump\u2019s endorsement repeatedly throughout the weekend, saying he hopes that it will unite the party behind him.
