Sen. Mark Warner<\/a> (D-VA) said he wants to hear Rep. Eric Swalwell\u2019s<\/a> \u201cside of the story\u201d before \u201cweighing in\u201d on the 2026 gubernatorial race in California<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Swalwell is facing growing calls to suspend his campaign for governor as he faces sexual assault allegations, which he denies. Warner said he\u2019s seen the reports against the congressman, whom he has only met \u201conce or twice.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to hear his side of the story, but obviously, if any of these allegations are true, um, uh, he should no longer be a candidate, at least candidate for governor,\u201d Warner said on CNN\u2019s State of the Union. \u201cBut again, I don\u2018t know any of the facts, and I\u2018m a little old-fashioned. I feel like I ought to hear the facts before I start weighing in.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rep. Eugene Vindman (D-VA), meanwhile, said Swalwell needs to withdraw from the race and \u201cresign\u201d over the \u201cabsolutely heinous\u201d accusations. When asked to clarify if Swalwell needs to resign from his seat in Congress, Vindman replied, \u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Across the political aisle, Rep. Byron Donalds<\/a> (R-FL) said on NBC\u2019s Meet the Press that he would vote to expel both Swalwell and Rep. Tony Gonzales (R-TX). The Texas lawmaker dropped his reelection bid after admitting to his affair<\/a> with former staffer Regina Santos-Aviles, and Donalds said \u201cBoth gentlemen need to go home.\u201d<\/p>\n

Swalwell said the allegations against him are \u201cabsolutely false,\u201d<\/a> and vowed to fight them \u201cwith everything that I have.\u201d The Manhattan District Attorney\u2019s Office, led by Alvin Bragg<\/a>, has opened an investigation into Swalwell over the allegations.<\/p>\n

Polling data<\/a> by EVITARUS among 1,200 likely primary voters in California\u2019s gubernatorial election put Swalwell in second place at 12%, behind Republican candidates Steve Hilton and Riverside County Chad Bianco. The data was collected from March 31 to April 5, before the allegations against Swalwell became public and before President Donald Trump endorsed Hilton<\/a>.<\/p>\n
