A private fireworks show for a corporate event in San Francisco on Saturday night rattled many Bay Area residents, who reported hearing loud booms from their homes in the city, the East Bay and Marin County, according to social media users and local media reports.<\/p>\n
The fireworks began around 9:45 p.m. near the Exploratorium and were part of an event held by Computers & Structures Inc., an engineering software company based in Walnut Creek, SFGATE<\/a> and ABC7 News Bay Area<\/a> reported. (The Chronicle and SFGATE are both owned by Hearst, but their newsrooms operate separately.)<\/p>\n The San Francisco Fire Department said the Port of San Francisco fire marshal oversees fireworks events on in that part of the bay; that office did not immediately respond to a request for more information. The Chronicle was unable to reach the company on Sunday.<\/p>\n Residents in cities including San Francisco, Emeryville, Oakland, Berkeley, Albany, Richmond and Sausalito reported hearing loud noises they thought were thunderstorms or gunshots, according to posts on NextDoor, Facebook and Reddit.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cAwfully loud and disturbing,\u201d a NextDoor user wrote from Elmwood, in Berkeley.\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cThis isn\u2019t just a minor inconvenience \u2014 it\u2019s genuinely harmful,\u201d a San Francisco resident posted on Facebook<\/a>. \u201cChildren with autism can become overwhelmed and distressed. People dealing with anxiety, PTSD, or other mental health challenges can be triggered. Dogs panic, birds scatter, and entire neighborhoods are disrupted.\u201d<\/p>\n Others initially worried that the noises could have been bombs, given the recent news that the FBI had warned<\/a> local law enforcement agencies that Iran considered a drone strike on the West Coast.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n \u201cHalf of you were thinking what I was thinking \u2026 that they were bombs,\u201d a NextDoor user wrote from Lower Solano, in Albany. \u201cBut, fortunately, this was purely entertainment.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n A similar display last year by CSI also caught residents off guard, ABC7 reported<\/a>.
