SAN DIEGO (FOX 5\/KUSI) \u2014 There is a newborn \u201ccheeky\u201d monkey in the Lost Forest area at the San Diego Zoo and the public can now see the baby.<\/p>\n

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance announced this week a baby Schmidt\u2019s\u00a0red-tailed guenon was born to first-time parents Janga, 5, and Jack, 6.<\/p>\n

Guenon\u2019s are unique because of their large \u201cchonkey\u201d cheek pouches where they store extra food, sometimes as much as their stomachs can hold.<\/p>\n

San Diego Zoo welcomes baby Schmidt\u2019s Red-Tailed Guenon (San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance) <\/p>\n

\u201cGuenon\u201d comes from the French word for monkey. The species is native to Africa and is classified as \u201csome endangered.\u201d<\/p>\n

After bonding with its parents, the baby monkey can now be seen by the public at their Ituri Forest habitat on Hippo Trail at the San Diego Zoo<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The San Diego Zoo last welcomed a baby Schmidt\u2019s Red-Tailed Monkey<\/a> in the fall of 2024.<\/p>\n

Guenon\u2019s typically live to about 16 years old.<\/p>\n
