{"id":265308,"date":"2026-04-13T09:00:08","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T09:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/265308\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T09:00:08","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T09:00:08","slug":"thousands-in-california-urged-to-stay-inside-keep-windows-closed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/265308\/","title":{"rendered":"Thousands in California Urged To Stay Inside\u2014\u2018Keep Windows Closed\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">Thousands of people in parts of California have been issued an\u00a0air quality alert and have been advised by the National Weather Service (NWS) to stay inside and &#8220;keep windows and doors closed,&#8221; as levels of particle pollution have reached &#8220;harmful&#8221; levels.<\/p>\n<p>Areas Affected by &#8216;Harmful&#8217; Particle Pollution<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">According to the air quality alert, which was issued by the South Coast Air Quality Management District and published by the NWS, the Coachella Valley\u2014including the cities of Indio, Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Palm Desert, Palm Desert Country, La Quinta and Coachella\u2014is at risk of &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/map-california-cities-keep-windows-doors-closed-hazardous-air-quality-alert-2053672\" id=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/map-california-cities-keep-windows-doors-closed-hazardous-air-quality-alert-2053672\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">harmful particle pollution levels<\/a>&#8221; until around midnight on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>What&#8217;s Causing Poor Air Quality in California?\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">The harmful levels of particle pollution are due to &#8220;windblown dust.&#8221; The NWS warns that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/air-pollution-pm1-submicron-usa-map-2085962\" id=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/air-pollution-pm1-submicron-usa-map-2085962\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">levels of air pollution<\/a> can vary in different locations and at different times, according to the weather conditions and local emissions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img id=\"11818990\" alt=\"\" caption=\"DEATH VALLEY, CA - FEBRUARY 28:  A sandstorm driven by 60 mph winds kicks sand and dust into the air along a dry lake bed on February 28, 2023, near Furnace Creek, California. They should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/your-homes-air-could-be-quietly-making-you-sick-but-one-thing-can-help-11408253\" id=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/your-homes-air-could-be-quietly-making-you-sick-but-one-thing-can-help-11408253\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">use air purifiers or filters<\/a> to keep clean air circulating and avoid using house fans or swamp coolers that could bring the polluted air inside.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">They should also try to help minimize particle pollution by reducing trips taken by cars or vehicles. Instead, they should take public transport, organize a carpool or work from home if possible. They shouldn&#8217;t use outdoor grills or gasoline-fueled lawnmowers or garden equipment. They should slow down when driving on dirt roads and try to stabilize any loose soil.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"Paragraph_blockParagraph__I2kr4\">They can also limit or reduce the intensity or duration of all outdoor physical activity until the conditions improve.
