{"id":265806,"date":"2026-04-13T17:00:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-13T17:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/265806\/"},"modified":"2026-04-13T17:00:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-13T17:00:11","slug":"new-california-law-requires-electrical-utility-worksites-to-have-aeds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/265806\/","title":{"rendered":"New California law requires electrical utility worksites to have AEDs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sacramento, CA \u2014 All public utilities in California and their independent contractors or subcontractors must have an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osha.gov\/aed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">AED<\/a> on worksites with electrical lines, under a new <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.digitaldemocracy.org\/bills\/ca_202520260ab365\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">state law<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/autl.assembly.ca.gov\/system\/files\/2025-03\/ab-365-schiavo.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">A.B. 365<\/a>, introduced by Assemblymember Pilar Schiavo (D-Chatsworth), specifically calls for an AED at sites where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safetyandhealthmagazine.com\/safety-on-the-line-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">electrical utility employees<\/a> are working on transmission or distribution lines of 601 volts or more. AEDs are medical devices designed to analyze heart rhythms and deliver an electric shock to victims of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.safetyandhealthmagazine.com\/27788-know-how-to-respond-to-sudden-cardiac-arrest\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">cardiac arrest<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Also known as the Justin Kropp Safety Act, the legislation is named for a lineworker who was electrocuted in 2018 while working at a site in the Mojave Desert. It went into effect Jan. 1.<\/p>\n<p>Additional requirements:<\/p>\n<p>Maintain and regularly test the AED based on the manufacturer\u2019s specifications.<br \/>\nCheck the readiness of an AED after every use and at least once every 30 days.<br \/>\nActivate the emergency medical services system as soon as possible once emergency care or treatment with an AED to a person in cardiac arrest is rendered, and report AED use to the local EMS agency.<br \/>\nCreate a written plan describing procedures in the event of an emergency that may involve AED use, including immediate notification of the EMS system.<\/p>\n<p>The International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Diamond Bar Local 47 and Vacaville Local 1245 applaud the legislation\u2019s enactment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work we do is inherently dangerous, but that doesn\u2019t soften the blow you get from losing a union brother or sister,\u201d Local 47 Business Manager Colin Lavin said in a press release. \u201cWe support any means of making our jobsites safer, and this bill is a simple yet incredibly effective way to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Sacramento, CA \u2014 All public utilities in California and their independent contractors or subcontractors must have an AED&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":265807,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[6786,116256,7,9,8,702,116257,116258,116259,116260,116261],"class_list":["post-265806","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-california","tag-aed","tag-automated-external-defibrillators","tag-california","tag-california-headlines","tag-california-news","tag-cpr","tag-first-aid","tag-first-aid-kits","tag-first-aid-program","tag-utility-worker-safety","tag-utility-workers"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/265806","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=265806"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/265806\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/265807"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=265806"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=265806"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=265806"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
