A ride-along with CHP officers highlighted the risks of distracted driving, with one driver receiving a citation for using a cellphone while driving. “So for that reason, you are receiving a ticket. All I need from you is this thing turned down there in the red box,” Officer Jaskaran Bhaurla said. When asked about the citation, Bhaurla explained, “That gentleman was cited for driving while using a cellphone.” “Distracted driving is something CHP officers say they’re continuing to see too often,” Bhaurla said, adding that the focus this month is to remind drivers that the risks of distracted driving are not worth it. “What we’re trying to do is we’re trying to avoid any kind of accidents, injuries or death that can result from a crash as a result of distracted driving. So we are out there enforcing strict driving laws to make sure that we’re keeping everybody safe,” Bhaurla said. While phones are the most common distraction, Officer Bhaurla noted that other factors can also divert a driver’s attention. “Other distractions are just passengers. You’re having a conversation. And that’s not something that people may think of as a distraction, but it can occur. Having a conversation with somebody, you may not be focused on the road. Or we live in Monterey County. We have great views. We have great sceneries. That often attracts attention, and it gets your eyes off of the roadway,” Bhaurla said. To minimize phone-related distractions, many drivers are using technology to stay focused. “They’ve begun hooking them up to their Apple CarPlay or their Android Auto or some type of infotainment system that they have in their vehicle that allows them to be able to keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road instead of manipulating their phone,” Bhaurla said. For those who received citations this Sunday, officers emphasized that they are fortunate to have the opportunity to learn from their mistakes.”While it may not feel like it, a citation means you get to go home and learn from it, something not everyone gets to do,” Bhaurla said. “So this vehicle ultimately crashed into another vehicle, which resulted in the death of two others,” Bhaurla said, recounting a tragic incident caused by distracted driving. “Those two deceased will never be able to see their family again, and all over a phone call or a text message,” he added.

The California Highway Patrol (CHP) is cracking down on distracted driving this month, aiming to prevent accidents, injuries, and fatalities caused by inattentive behavior on the road.

A ride-along with CHP officers highlighted the risks of distracted driving, with one driver receiving a citation for using a cellphone while driving.

“So for that reason, you are receiving a ticket.
