Eric Swalwell of sexual assault and other misconduct. Swalwell denied the allegations but suspended his campaign for governor on Sunday night and announced Monday he would resign from Congress.

Support was diffuse among other candidates in the crowded field.

Swalwell polled third best in San Diego, with 10%, ahead of Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco, a Republican, and former U.S. Rep. Katie Porter, a Democrat, who both had 8%, according to the poll. Another 23% remain undecided. Statewide polling showed 18% are undecided.

Nearly 90% of San Diego residents who responded to the poll did so before news stories published on Friday in the San Francisco Chronicle and CNN in which a former Swalwell staffer accused the congressman of sexually assaulting her twice.

Swalwell had been one of the most prominent candidates in a race where no clear frontrunner has emerged on the Democratic side.

That’s caused fear to percolate among Democrats that having so many candidates in the field would allow Hilton and Bianco, two Republicans, to advance in the June primary. In California’s primary system, the top two candidates advance irrespective of party affiliation.

Hilton, a British-American Fox News host, won the endorsement of President Donald Trump earlier this month. But the president’s backing wasn’t enough to get Hilton support from the California GOP. At the state party’s San Diego convention over the weekend, the party split over whether to back Hilton or Bianco.

Statewide, Hilton had the support of about 47% of Republicans and Bianco had 24%, polling found. Steyer, a billionaire hedge fund manager turned liberal activist, had support from 9% of Republicans.

In San Diego County, Hilton saw deeper GOP support, with 52% of Republicans backing him compared to 19% who support Bianco.

On the Democratic side, Steyer has tapped his personal wealth to blanket television and social media with campaign ads.

Steyer led among young voters in San Diego County as well as Democrats and those with a high school education, according to the poll.

Only a slim portion of San Diego voters responded to the poll in the aftermath of the allegations against Swalwell. But of those who did, support jumped for a crop of Democratic candidates who have so far failed to get major traction in the race.

Support for former Health and Human Services secretary Xavier Becerra went from 4% to 9% after the Swalwell news, according to the poll. It similarly jumped for former Los Angeles mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and former state controller Betty Yee.

San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan saw his support in San Diego dip from 5% to 2% after the allegations against Swalwell became public.

Support also dipped a percentage point for the race’s other top Democrats, Steyer and Porter.

The poll also found that San Diego area voters are supportive of a ballot measure to raise taxes for the ultra-wealthy but split over a potential local ballot measure to bring in more revenue for county government.

Sixty-four percent of respondents said they backed a ballot measure calling to impose a one-time 5% tax on any residents of California whose net worth is more than $1 billion, the poll found.

Statewide support was at 63%, the poll found.

A major labor union, SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West, is currently gathering signatures to get the measure on the ballot.

Another organized-labor backed ballot measure to raise taxes in San Diego County was just shy of getting majority support, according to the poll.

Forty-nine percent of respondents said they support a ballot measure for a half-cent sales tax surcharge to fund county programs such as social services, wildfire prevention and mitigation for the Tijuana River Valley sewage crisis.

The sales tax hike had support from 54% of voters age 18 to 49, the poll found. It also had majority support among Democrats, renters and people who make less than $40,000 a year.

Both the billionaire tax and sales tax hike need a simple majority to pass.

Likely voters polled in San Diego County overwhelmingly chose the cost of living as the biggest issue facing California. That drew a 48% response, followed by homelessness, 10%; immigration, 9%; housing, 8%; and threats to democracy, 7%.

The poll was conducted online from April 8-10.

Republican Steve Hilton and Democrat Tom Steyer have the most support in San Diego County to be California’s…

[28
100,13,74,76,75,1696
0":"post-267286","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-san-diego","8":"tag-news","9":"tag-politics","10":"tag-san-diego","11":"tag-san-diego-headlines","12":"tag-san-diego-news","13":"tag-top-stories-sdut
["GET
