(KGET) \u2014 There\u2019s a saying that everyone deserves a second chance, and there\u2019s a program in Kern County that embodies that \u2014 perhaps for those who need it the most.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI\u2019ve been in the juvenile justice system since I was 13. All I knew was the streets and gangbanging because I was uneducated,\u201d said Nicholas Miller. \u201cI was uneducated for a long time until I met Jaubrae.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.kget.com\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Never miss a story: Make KGET.com your homepage;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Never miss a story&quot;}\"> Never miss a story: Make KGET.com your homepage <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Jaubrae Dixon went to prison for nearly a decade when he was still a teenager for a gun charge.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI found myself incarcerated at a young age, end up serving a total of nine years at the age of 17 years old for brandishing a firearm,\u201d Dixon said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Two years after his release, Dixon\u2019s a different man. Now, he mentors young adults in his very position.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cBy the grace of God, you know, through that experience, I was able to change my life,\u201d Dixon said. \u201cAnd so, to come home for the last two years and dedicate my life to being a part of the solution in the same way that I was once part of the problem.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\"><a class=\"link \" href=\"https:\/\/www.kget.com\/plus\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Watch \u2018After Sunrise\u2019 on KGET+; Click to learn how to get KGET+ on your smart TV devices;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" data-yga=\"{&quot;yLinkElement&quot;:&quot;context_link&quot;,&quot;yModuleName&quot;:&quot;content-canvas&quot;,&quot;yLinkText&quot;:&quot;Watch \u2018After Sunrise\u2019 on KGET+&quot;}\"> Watch \u2018After Sunrise\u2019 on KGET+; Click to learn how to get KGET+ on your smart TV devices <\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Dixon attended Tuesday\u2019s County Supervisors Meeting to proclaim Second Chances Month, part of a nationwide effort in the U.S. to raise awareness about barriers facing teenage Americans with criminal records.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">It focuses on unlocking opportunities for housing, employment, and education and reducing recidivism by expunging the criminal records of young offenders with court approval.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cI was invited by Mr. Dixon, who has an incredible story of second chances,\u201d said Alekxia Torees Stallings. \u201cAnd we are so fortunate to be hosting him as one of our petitioners in the clinic, so naturally, he felt like it was a good connection to have the legal fields be a part of this, because we can help close that chapter in people\u2019s lives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While a huge step, there still needs to be resources for people who have faced his situation after-the-fact, says Dixon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">\u201cThe resources aren\u2019t in place, housing, transportation, jobs, and I think that, you know, Kern County, Bakersfield, moving in the right direction and having proclamations and partnering and collaborate,\u201d Dixon said. \u201cAnd I think that both in the writing, the resources, applying this proclamation, I think that would be the big step that we look forward to.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Copyright 2026 Nexstar Media, Inc.
