ALL RIGHT, LET’S TALK KCRA 3 WEATHER NOW. AND THE NORTH WINDS ARE RAMPING UP TODAY. AND THAT COULD BE SOME BAD NEWS. IF YOU ARE EASILY IRRITATED BY THE POLLEN. LET’S GO TO OPHELIA YOUNG WITH MORE ON HOW THESE WINDS COULD INCREASE THOSE ALLERGENS. YEAH YOU GUYS, I FELT IT EVEN BEFORE I OPENED MY EYES THIS MORNING. I KNEW IT WAS GOING TO BE A BAD ALLERGY DAY. SO WHAT’S IN THE AIR? WELL, WE HAVE NOT SO MUCH WEED POLLEN. WE DO HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF GRASS POLLEN, BUT IT’S MOSTLY TREE POLLEN IN OUR AIR. MORE SPECIFICALLY, ASH, OAK AND MULBERRY, WHICH AN IMMUNOLOGIST TOLD ME A COUPLE WEEKS AGO IS ONE OF THE WORST ALLERGY OFFENDERS. THESE POLLEN FLY VERY EASILY, ESPECIALLY WHEN THE AIR IS DRY AND THE WIND IS ACTIVE, CARRYING IT OFF THE TREES ALL AROUND THE REGION AND INTO YOUR SINUSES. TAMARA’S BEEN SAYING ALL MORNING LONG. TODAY IS AND WILL BE A WINDY DAY. NOW, THE GOOD NEWS IS THAT TODAY WILL BE THE WORST OF THE NEXT FIVE DAYS BECAUSE OF THE STRONG WINDS. AS THE WINDS LINGER TOMORROW, FRIDAY COULD BE AN UNCOMFORTABLE DAY TOO FOR THOSE WITH ALLERGIES, BUT SATURDAY YOUR SYMPTOMS ARE EXPECTED TO SLIGHTLY IMPROVE, THOUGH IT COULD GET WORSE AGAIN SUNDAY AS TEMPERATURES WARM AND ALSO SIGNAL SOME POLLEN PRODUCTION. FORTUNATELY, WE DO HAVE SOME RAIN NEXT WEEK AND THAT USUALLY DOES HELP KNOCK THE POLLEN BACK DOWN ONTO THE GROUND. AND FOR MORE ON WHEN I’LL SEND IT TO TAMARIND’S STUDIO. YEAH, IT’S BEEN INTERESTING. I THINK THAT NEXT WEEK WE’RE CERTAINLY GOING TO GET SOME BENEFIT FROM THE RAIN, NOT ONLY FOR REALLY KIND OF MOISTENING THE THE GROUNDWATER AND ALSO FOR KIND OF DAMPENING THE POLLEN. WHAT’S BEEN INTERESTING IS WHERE YOU NOTICE THAT THERE ISN’T MUCH IN THE WAY OF A BREEZE OR THE WIND SHELTERED AREAS OF THE EASTERN SIDE OF THE VALLEY FLOOR HAVE ACTUALLY STARTED TO SEE SOME FOG DEVELOPMENT, INCLUDING IN SOME OF THE MOTHERLODE COMMUNITIES LIKE RIGHT HERE IN AMADOR COUNTY. THIS IS THE VIEW FROM BUENA VISTA. SO JUST TO THE EASTERN SIDE OF LAKE COMANCHE AND LOOKING OUT TOWARDS THE 49 STRETCH, THERE’S THE LOW CLOUD DEVELOPMENT. NOW, JUST A FEW MOMENTS AGO, VISIBILITY WAS JUST BELOW A QUARTER OF A MILE IN THE TOWN OF PLYMOUTH. THAT’S ACTUALLY JUST IMPROVED. IN FACT, THAT’S WHY THE SENSORS GIVE US THE MOST UP TO DATE REAL TIME INFORMATION. IT’S NOT LOOKING THAT BAD. IT LOOKS LIKE SOME OF THAT LOWER CLOUD DEVELOPMENT IS STARTING TO BREAK UP. THE BIGGEST FEATURE IN THE FORECAST TODAY WILL BE IN THE VALLEY. WITH THAT BREEZE. IT WILL BE A BRIGHT, BREEZY DAY TODAY THAT WILL KEEP THINGS FEELING A LITTLE BRISK IN THE AFTERNOON. SO EVEN THOUGH THE TEMPERATURE IS GOING TO WARM INTO THE UPPER 60S, YOU KIND OF WANT TO DRESS FOR THE WIND ON THE DAY LIKE THIS, ESPECIALLY IN THE VALLEY AND DELTA COMMUNITIES, AS THAT WIND COULD WHIP AROUND AND MAKE THINGS FEEL COOLER THAN THE TEMPERATURE ACTUALLY READS. SUNSHINE AND LOW 60S FEATURED IN THE FORECAST TODAY AROUND AUBURN. THE WIND WILL BE AROUND, BUT IT WON’T BE AS STRONG OR AS GUSTY AS, LET’S SAY, THE VALLEY FLOOR. AND WE HAD OUR TASTE OF THOSE GUSTY WINDS YESTERDAY IN THE SIERRA. TODAY TRUCKEE NOT TOO BAD. SUNSHINE AND UPPER 40S FEATURING THE FORECAST AND IT SHOULD BE A NICE DAY. A BETTER DAY FOR OUTDOOR RECREATION. NEXT TEN MINUTES I’LL OUTLINE TH

Northern California pollen forecast: Why Thursday could be a rough day for allergy sufferers

   Updated: 9:23 AM PDT Apr 16, 2026

  Editorial Standards ⓘ

Thursday is shaping up to be a rough one for allergy sufferers across the region, thanks to a combination of dry air, gusty winds, and high tree pollen levels. The main culprit in the air is a moderate level of grass pollen, but mostly tree pollen. The biggest contributors at the moment are Oak, Ash, and Mulberry trees. Mulberry, in particular, is one of the of the worst offenders this time of year, according to some immunologists and allergy specialists. These types of pollen spread very easily, especially when conditions are dry and windy. Pollen is light and easily airborne in dry air, and strong winds then carry them off trees and across the region. The good news is that Thursday is expected to be the worst allergy day of the next five because of the strongest winds. Breezy conditions will continue into Friday, so that could still be an uncomfortable day for many people dealing with seasonal allergies.By Saturday, symptoms may improve slightly as winds ease. However, allergy conditions could worsen again on Sunday as temperatures warm, which can also signal pollen production. There is some relief in sight. Rain is in the forecast next week, and that typically helps knock pollen out of the air and bring at least temporary improvement for allergy sufferers.See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel

      SACRAMENTO, Calif. —

Thursday is shaping up to be a rough one for allergy sufferers across the region, thanks to a combination of dry air, gusty winds, and high tree pollen levels.

The main culprit in the air is a moderate level of grass pollen, but mostly tree pollen.
