(WLOX) – It\u2019s been more than a week since over a dozen residents were abruptly told they had to leave the Equal Steps Veterans Home in Long Beach.<\/p>\n
Equal Steps Veterans Home was shut down last Saturday, just one day after its owner, Nekole Predium, was booked on a warrant for felony bad checks out of Slidell.<\/p>\n

Officials said the home never had a state license to operate as a care home.<\/p>\n
WLOX obtained an incident report from the Long Beach Police Department, which detailed what officers saw inside the home.<\/p>\n
The report described the poor condition of the residents, with many of them smelling strongly of urine and without proper access to a restroom.<\/p>\n
One resident was quoted as saying, \u201cI\u2019m living in hell,\u201d and asked officers to get him out. <\/p>\n
Police also learned that one of the residents was listed as a missing in the National Crime Information Center database.<\/p>\n
Of the 17 residents mentioned in the report, Predium was listed as the next of kin for six of them.<\/p>\n
After the home shut down, many of the residents were taken to local hospitals until they could find new living arrangements.<\/p>\n
As far as what comes next for those who were displaced, there is a potential opportunity for the City of Long Beach to declare the event a local emergency. That would allow the housing authority to provide rental assistance to any of the displaced veterans who qualify.<\/p>\n
