Reese Witherspoon<\/a> is hyping A.I. again<\/a>, and American authors have a few thoughts. <\/p>\n

The Oscar-winning actor and producer, known for spotlighting women\u2019s voices through her famed book club, television and screen projects<\/a>, may have been barking up the wrong tree when she told her social media followers that it was time to learn A.I. on Wednesday. <\/p>\n

\u201cWell\u2026I\u2019ve decided it\u2019s TIME,\u201d she wrote in the caption of an Instagram reel on Wednesday. \u201cThe AI revolution has begun, and I need to learn as much as I possibly can about AI and share it with all of you. Also, FYI: the jobs women hold are 3x more likely to be automated by AI, yet women are using AI at a rate 25% lower than men on average. We don\u2019t want to be left behind. So\u2026do you want to learn with me?\u201d<\/p>\n

In the video, which the star shared across social media platforms, Witherspoon said she was with 10 women at a book club this week. \u201cI said to the 10 of them, \u2018How many of you guys use AI?\u2019 And only three of them used AI. And then I said, \u2018How many of the three of you feel like you really know what you\u2019re doing or using it the right way?\u2019 And there was only one person,\u201d she said. <\/p>\n

\u201cSo, if three out of 10 women are the only ones using AI, that means 70% of that group is not keeping up. The thing I\u2019ve learned about technology is if you don\u2019t get a little bit of understanding from the very beginning, it just speeds past you. So you have to have little bits of learning just to keep up.\u201d<\/p>\n

The \u201cBig Little Lies<\/a>\u201d star then seemingly put out a feeler for an A.I. learning course saying, \u201cI think we should learn the basics together and learn some really good tools that are going to make our everyday lives easier and better. Do you want me to share what I\u2019m learning with you?\u201d <\/p>\n

While there were plenty of comments from fans and stars hyping up Witherspoon\u2019s sentiment \u2014 Former co-stars Ali Larter<\/a> said \u201cYes yes yes!\u201d and Kerry Washington<\/a> said \u201cTHIS\u201d \u2014 many of the replies called the actor out, citing environmental<\/a>, economic<\/a>, social,<\/a> educational<\/a> and intellectual<\/a> concerns, among others. <\/p>\n

One group that was especially vocal in their opposition to A.I., was the literary community, and writers and authors across the country didn\u2019t hold back when sharing their two cents. <\/p>\n

Bestselling \u201cBad Feminist\u201d author Roxane Gay<\/a> chimed in on Threads, writing, \u201cOh Reese. Absolutely not.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cThis is obviously a scripted ad and it\u2019s genuinely infuriating. Notice how AI\u2019s biggest defenders are the ones cashing checks from it,\u201d wrote screenwriter and director Charlene Bagcal on Threads. \u201cAI isn\u2019t inevitable. Technology follows society. If people stop using it, it dies. We still have agency.\u201d <\/p>\n

\u201cJagged Little Pill\u201d author and literary agent Eric Smith weighed in, \u201cAs someone who champions authors and books the way you do, this is so disappointing.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAI plagiarized all my books. It seems unlikely that I\u2019ll be \u2018left behind\u2019 if I don\u2019t use it, given that it\u2019s trained on work I did years ago,\u201d wrote \u201cGet Well Soon\u201d author Jennifer Wright. <\/p>\n

Writer and actor Rati Gupta said, \u201cHow am *I* the one being \u201cleft behind\u201d by not using AI when *my* cognitive function will remain fully intact and uncompromised?\u201d<\/p>\n

And Sophia Benoit posted, \u201cThere\u2019s something particularly insidious about seeing that women\u2014 the group you have built your brand on\u2014 have not adopted something and instead of assuming it\u2019s out of wisdom, infantalizing them with \u2018we\u2019re falling behind.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

In 2021, Witherspoon\u2019s company, Hello Sunshine, partnered with World of Women (WoW), an NFT collective, and the actor similarly caught flak from followers for tweeting \u201cIn the (near) future, every person will have a parallel digital identity. Avatars, crypto wallets, digital goods will be the norm. Are you planning for this?\u201d <\/p>\n
