{"id":272367,"date":"2026-04-17T09:39:24","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T09:39:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/272367\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T09:39:24","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T09:39:24","slug":"why-steyer-could-benefit-most-from-swalwells-exit-in-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/272367\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Steyer could benefit most from Swalwell\u2019s exit in California"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1md5ra000x25p2h0treyuq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In the muddled California gubernatorial race, Democrats are simultaneously growing more confident and more uncertain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t00083b6qycw17iy9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Compared with just weeks ago, Democrats are far more optimistic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/05\/politics\/california-governor-election-democrats-analysis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">they will avoid a one-two GOP finish in the June primary<\/a> that would ensure a Republican governor next year in the nation\u2019s biggest blue state.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t00093b6qiu2xmar1@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But at the same time, they have even less clarity about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/12\/politics\/eric-swalwell-sexual-misconduct-california-governors-race-tom-steyer-katie-porter-xavier-becerra\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">which of their party\u2019s candidates<\/a> is most likely to crack the top two and proceed to the general election, where any Democrat will be a prohibitive favorite over any Republican. Democratic strategists generally agree that self-funding billionaire Tom Steyer has the inside track \u2014 but might still be overtaken.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000a3b6q4uwjxj9a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This rapid reconfiguration of the race is the result of two seismic jolts that seem unrelated, but have had an unexpectedly reinforcing effect.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000b3b6qzhtcz65n@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The first was President Donald Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/06\/politics\/steve-hilton-trump-endorsement-california-hnk\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">perplexing decision to endorse Republican Steve Hilton on April 6<\/a>. Trump\u2019s move increased the odds that Hilton would pull away from his GOP rival Chad Bianco, but diminished the chances they would evenly split the limited GOP primary vote, which is the only way they could finish one-two in the June primary and block Democrats from the ballot in November.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000c3b6q4b0fvpc9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The second big event was the instantaneous collapse of Rep. Eric Swalwell\u2019s campaign last weekend after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/10\/us\/eric-swalwell-sexual-misconduct-allegations-invs\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">CNN<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/politics\/article\/eric-swalwell-allegations-22198271.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the San Francisco Chronicle<\/a> published detailed accounts from women who alleged that he raped or otherwise sexually abused them. The fall of Swalwell \u2014 who had shown signs of edging ahead of the other Democrats in both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ppic.org\/publication\/ppic-statewide-survey-californians-and-education-april-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">polling<\/a> and institutional support \u2014 increases the pool of Democratic-leaning voters available to the other candidates, which further reduces the fear that the party could be locked out from the general election. But his demise also left the Democratic side of the contest without a clear front-runner.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000d3b6qwpa2mou0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            After Trump\u2019s endorsement, the risk of Republicans locking out Democrats from the general election \u201cprobably takes care of itself,\u201d said Garry South, a Democratic strategist who has worked on four California gubernatorial races. \u201cThe real question is what Democrat elevates up the ranks into a No. 1 or 2 position. And I think that\u2019s an open question at this point.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/02-ap26100737623321.jpg\" alt=\"California gubernatorial candidate Steve Hilton talks to a reporter at the California Republican Party Convention in San Diego, on April 10.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2407\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000f3b6qm1rpw1e8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/04\/05\/politics\/california-governor-election-democrats-analysis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The biggest question looming over the June 2 primary<\/a> has been whether Democrats could be locked out of the governorship under the state\u2019s top two primary, in which all candidates run in a single primary, with the two highest finishers proceeding to the general election. Democrats faced that risk because their voters were fragmenting across a large field while Republican voters \u2014 though likely only around one-third of the total primary electorate \u2014 were dividing between only two serious contenders.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000g3b6qnlf4icf0@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But Trump\u2019s endorsement of Hilton, a former Fox commentator and adviser to the British Conservative Party, over Bianco, the Republican sheriff of Riverside County, has greatly eased Democratic fears.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000h3b6q98w8bb5c@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Analysts in both parties believe that Trump\u2019s endorsement has positioned Hilton to consolidate a bigger share of the limited Republican vote over time, lowering Bianco\u2019s likely ceiling. That in turn will reduce the risk of a lockout by decreasing the vote total any Democrat needs to reach the top two.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000i3b6qtyfkzjcz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEverybody was so panicked about \u2026 this two-Republican thing,\u201d said John Emerson, a longtime Democratic activist and fundraiser in Los Angeles who served as the White House liaison to California for former President Bill Clinton. \u201cThen Trump goes and endorses Hilton, and people are saying, \u2018Well, I guess that solves that problem.\u2019\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000j3b6qi8ta2bca@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dan Schnur, a former Republican adviser who now teaches political communication at the University of Southern California and the University of California at Berkeley, said Trump may have wanted to ensure one Republican reaches the general election to encourage turnout <a href=\"https:\/\/calmatters.org\/politics\/2026\/03\/california-voter-id-initiative\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">for a voter identification ballot initiative conservatives are hoping to place on the November ballot<\/a>. But in the process, Schnur says, \u201cfor all practical purposes Trump\u2019s endorsement ensured there will be a Republican on the ballot in the fall, but a Democratic governor next January.\u201d Which Democrat is best positioned to seize that opportunity, though, remains far from clear.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/03-ap26035091206843.jpg\" alt=\"From left: Xavier Becerra, Steve Hilton, Matt Mahan, Tom Steyer, Tony Thurmond, Antonio Villaraigosa and Betty Yee stand on the stage during the California gubernatorial candidate debate in San Francisco, on Febrary 3.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000l3b6qdgl9r1jy@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Probably the most famous quote ever about California politics came from Robert Shrum, a longtime former Democratic strategist who is now director of the Dornsife Center for the Political Future at the University of Southern California. During a 1986 Senate race, Shrum memorably told the Los Angeles Times that \u201ca campaign rally in California is three people around a television set.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000m3b6q53d0bueq@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Reached this week, Shrum told me that he would now update that assessment \u2014 slightly. \u201cI would say a political rally in California is three people around a television set and one person holding up their iPhone,\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000n3b6qi70uee48@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Shrum\u2019s maxim reflects the difficulty candidates face attracting attention from voters in the nation\u2019s largest state. Even for the most talented and compelling candidates, becoming known in a state so large, distracted and expensive to advertise in is an enormous challenge. And no one would describe this field as particularly talented or compelling.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000o3b6qcfokb5ll@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cNobody has galvanized the voters,\u201d says David Binder, who has polled for former Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Gavin Newsom, and is not working for any of the current contenders. \u201cIf you look at the candidates who have gathered momentum and excitement around the country on the Democratic side, they are generally younger people who have an element of charisma \u2014 (James) Talarico, (Zohran) Mamdani, AOC (Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez) \u2014 those are the ones people are paying attention to. Our California candidates have not yet shown the ability to generate (that) level of excitement.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000p3b6qyu1zdy2h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            This year\u2019s Democratic race has unfolded without an obvious leader, especially after Harris and Democratic Sen. Alex Padilla passed on it. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/10\/15\/politics\/katie-porter-california-reaction\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Former Rep. Katie Porter<\/a> took an early lead among Democrats, but her support tumbled when video surfaced of her berating a television reporter, and she\u2019s never regained that lost ground. Her major early rival, former state Attorney General and federal Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra, never generated interest commensurate with his resume, a verdict that also applies to former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, former State Controller Betty Yee and current state Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000q3b6qvhy9rtad@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The weakness of that field prompted late entries from Swalwell, Steyer and San Jose Mayor Matt Mahan. Before Swalwell imploded, he showed signs of separating himself from the other Democrats, for instance by winning endorsements from the powerful <a href=\"https:\/\/seiuca.org\/press-releases\/2026\/03\/13\/seiu-california-endorses-eric-swalwell-for-governor\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Service Employees International Union<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cta.org\/press-release\/california-teachers-association-recommends-eric-swalwell-for-california-state-governor\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">California Teachers Association<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/04-gettyimages-2258202395.jpg\" alt=\"Tom Steyer and Eric Swalwell attend a climate-focused gubernatorial forum in Pasadena, California, on January 28.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"1600\" width=\"2400\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000s3b6q05iq7ijf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            With Swalwell gone, most Democratic analysts give Steyer the edge. That\u2019s primarily because of his overwhelming financial advantage. As of Wednesday, he had spent nearly $116 million in television and digital advertising, according to data from AdImpact tracked by CNN. That\u2019s about three-fourths of the money spent on advertising by all the candidates from both parties.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000t3b6qeny4wt0p@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI would say traditionally this race is over because Steyer\u2019s money will cancel anything else out,\u201d said Lara Bergthold, a Los Angeles-based communications consultant for liberal causes and former executive director of the Hollywood Women\u2019s Political Committee. \u201cIn a big field like this, money and name recognition means that when the regular voter gets into the polling place and looks at the choices they will go, \u2018The only name I recognize here is Steyer.\u2019\u201d But Bergthold, like other Democratic strategists, added, \u201cI don\u2019t feel like it\u2019s cooked (for Steyer) at all.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000u3b6q154yocz5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Steyer skeptics note that all his spending has only raised his support into the low double digits. South compared him to Al Checchi, another super-wealthy political newcomer who spent lavishly but lost the California Democratic nomination for governor in 1998. Steyer \u201chas done what multimillionaire, self-funded candidates often do, which is he\u2019s overexposed himself,\u201d South said. \u201cYou can\u2019t watch TV without seeing a Steyer ad every three minutes. You have to wonder if he\u2019s worn out his welcome, as Al Checchi did.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000v3b6q8b7ib9gm@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Steyer, a former hedge fund executive, has also defined himself as an unabashed progressive, basically a billionaire version of Sen. Bernie Sanders. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/751998334006719\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">He\u2019s endorsed a single-payer Medicare for All<\/a> state government takeover of the health care system, <a href=\"https:\/\/tomsteyer.substack.com\/p\/how-california-can-put-ice-in-jail\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">pledged to criminally prosecute federal immigration agents<\/a>, and said <a href=\"https:\/\/tomsteyer.substack.com\/p\/its-time-for-corporations-and-billionaires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">he will vote for a controversial wealth tax<\/a> if its supporters qualify it for the November ballot.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000w3b6qe9t3i2k9@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That aggressive positioning gives Steyer a base on the left but exposes him to two risks. One is that he may have trouble extending his reach beyond the party\u2019s most liberal elements \u2014 only about one-fourth of Democratic voters identify as \u201cvery\u201d liberal in PPIC polling \u2014 even as Porter remains a formidable competitor for that support. \u201cIf one of them was not running, the other would be a very strong favorite right now,\u201d said Schnur, referring to Porter and Steyer. \u201cBut they split the progressive vote, which may end up creating an opportunity for another alternative.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000x3b6qu81fo83a@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The bigger risk for Steyer may be attacks on his liberal bona fides that frame him as an opportunist and a hypocrite. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/california-playbook\/2026\/03\/31\/swalwell-basks-in-trumps-ire-00851518\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">A group of business interests opposed to him is airing ads<\/a> slamming investments he made during his finance career in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=BEZ7epLzrN0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">private prisons, companies involved in ICE detention, and fossil fuels<\/a>. Steyer has parried with what some neutral observers consider <a href=\"https:\/\/next.frame.io\/share\/dc16d705-97be-48fa-8e62-95da0d36493e\/reel\/a32c95f8-1a0b-4ac5-a38c-1b1a6e27999f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">an effective response ad<\/a>, but given that voter impressions of him are so shallow, few discount the risk from a sustained attack on these grounds.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t000y3b6q4x3zuz64@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Other than Steyer, Mahan, the San Jose mayor, has the most money, and probably the clearest lane in the race \u2014 though little support in polls so far. Mahan has positioned himself as the moderate alternative, pledging to reassess state regulations; take more aggressive steps to reduce the homeless population; and <a href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/news\/politics\/heres-how-californias-next-governor-will-change-your-taxes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">freeze taxes until the state better monitors its existing spending<\/a>. Some question his pointed criticism of Newsom \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/transcripts.cnn.com\/show\/cg\/date\/2026-03-30\/segment\/01\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">on CNN recently, for example, Mahan said his grade on the governor\u2019s tenure is \u201cprobably in the C range<\/a>\u201d \u2014 at a time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ppic.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/crosstabs-likely-voters-0226.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">when Newsom\u2019s approval rating among state Democrats in PPIC polling<\/a> exceeds 80%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t00133b6qi2nbuo49@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Mahan\u2019s biggest vulnerability, though, is the flip side of his biggest strength: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-04-14\/california-billionaires-rally-behind-matt-mahan-for-governor-after-swalwell-exit?utm_source=website&amp;utm_medium=share&amp;utm_campaign=copy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">the millions he has raised from Silicon Valley interests<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.joelonsdale.com\/p\/taking-thiel-seriously-on-the-antichrist\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">including some around Peter Thiel<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yahoo.com\/entertainment\/celebrity\/articles\/trump-gushes-over-google-founder-145653534.html?guccounter=1&amp;guce_referrer=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuZ29vZ2xlLmNvbS8&amp;guce_referrer_sig=AQAAAEJdX_kQdaiZLywj48BfoBRW2wPvggjX-T57lVYEPcMinc4OSFj1I3hxTWzV3sSGlxfUTLYegF1Aso_nQifYDKXSvv3Vft6_jMsXXJayV5I4ZGwQk_TLl-A6YvK-PEjvjBCiAu_bwUcUheUs48HXhDK1kX3hPGelH6LX7Aw-SB-t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">other wealthy executives who are close to Trump<\/a>. If Mahan \u201cstarts to rise,\u201d South said, \u201cthe next move that Steyer makes in my mind is to go after the guy with all guns blazing.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/substack.com\/home\/post\/p-189384434\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Steyer has already dinged Mahan as my \u201ctech-bro-funded opponent.\u201d<\/a>\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t00143b6qqaxwt7z6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Bergthold said if Swalwell\u2019s collapse encourages a kind of flight to safety, Becerra, with his impressive resume, might get a second look from more voters. \u201cIf the Swalwell thing becomes a pox on all their houses and I just want somebody who is calm and steady and can do the job, then Becerra could be that,\u201d she said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3t00153b6q3uxhyrly@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Likewise, since women will likely cast almost 60% of the Democratic votes in June, Porter might get a late look among female voters disgusted by the Swalwell scandal. If Mahan stalls, business groups might even find Porter more acceptable than Steyer, predicted Rob Stutzman, a GOP consultant. \u201cI repeatedly hear from (business groups), \u2018I can\u2019t believe I\u2019m saying this, but she was really impressive, she was prepared, she knew her stuff,\u2019\u201d he said.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmo1tct3u00163b6qnbshtjs5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet Bergthold, like others watching the race, said the limited funding available to everyone except Steyer and Mahan will make it very difficult to emerge from the pack in a race that has generated so little engagement from voters.
