Bridge. Belong. Strengthening Black Media.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The two-day conference kicks off at 4 p.m. Friday, April 24, at Aggie Square\u2019s Assembly Hall with a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/luma.com\/og6b77lo\">\u201cCommunity Town Hall: Media, Policing &amp; Public Trust.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The 90-minute forum, moderated by KCRA weekend anchor Cecil Hannibal, features former Sacramento Police Chief Daniel Hahn, Sacramento County Sheriff Jim Cooper and retired Seattle Police Chief Carmen Best in a discussion \u201cabout the relationship between media and police \u2014 and how it shapes public trust.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The town hall is open to the public. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/luma.com\/og6b77lo\">Registration<\/a> is required.<\/p>\n<p>An opening reception will be at 7 p.m. Friday, April 24, at the Hilton Sacramento Arden West, 2200 Harvard St.<\/p>\n<p>Kevin Frazier, host of television\u2019s \u201cEntertainment Tonight,\u201d will deliver the keynote address. Sacramento Mayor Kevin McCarty and NABJ President Errin Haines will also speak.<\/p>\n<p>The conference returns to Aggie Square\u2019s Assembly Hall at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, April 25, with a full day of programming, including seminars on media serving underrepresented regions, opportunities and challenges facing Black sports journalists, and journalism in an emerging artificial intelligence landscape.<\/p>\n<p>The national journalism association\u2019s Region IV<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"Follow nofollow noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nabjonline.org\/about\/regions-chapters-task-forces-2\/regions\/#:~:text=NABJ%20members%20are%20from%20every,N.Y.%2C%20Pa.%2C%20R.I.%2C%20Vt.%2C%20Va.\"> represents 13 western states<\/a> including California. It is the first time the association\u2019s Sacramento chapter has hosted a regional conference, said NABJ Sacramento President Brandi Cummings, a KCRA morning anchor.<\/p>\n<p>The conference\u2019s Sacramento debut is a milestone for a capital chapter that relaunched in 2023 and is part of a busy slate of events this year, including a Journalism Day set for September at Sacramento State and the chapter\u2019s annual Black Media Table Talk in November at the University of the Pacific\u2019s Sacramento campus in Oak Park.<\/p>\n<p>Organizers described the weekend event as a rare opportunity for working journalists, students and media professionals to meet in the same room \u2014 participating in educational workshops, seminars for developing journalists and town hall-style discussions with local community leaders.<\/p>\n<p>Cummings said she also sees the conference, with its gathering of journalists from across the western U.S., as an opportunity for media organizations to recruit and bring more diverse voices into their newsrooms.<\/p>\n<p>The conference ends with a 6 p.m. closing ceremony at Assembly Hall where scholarships will be presented to high school and collegiate awardees.<\/p>\n<p>An 8 p.m. closing reception follows at the Hilton Sacramento Arden West, featuring mistress of ceremonies, Melanie Townsend, morning anchor at Fox 40 (KTXL).<\/p>\n<p>                <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/profile\/218174875\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><br \/>\n                        <img decoding=\"async\" class=\"author-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/1776439866_794_SAC_Smith_Darrell_Author_Mug (1).JPG\" width=\"400\" height=\"400\" alt=\"Profile Image of Darrell Smith\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><br \/>\n                    <\/a><\/p>\n<p>                <a class=\"author-name\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/profile\/218174875\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Darrell Smith<\/a><\/p>\n<p>                    The Sacramento Bee<\/p>\n<p>            Darrell Smith is a local reporter for The Sacramento Bee.
