LONG BEACH, Calif. — Long Beach State battled into extra innings but came up short in a 7-5 loss to San Diego State on Wednesday evening at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field.

\nThe Dirtbags struck first in the opening frame as Trotter Enright<\/a> doubled down the left field line and later scored on a sacrifice fly from Dylan Lina<\/a> to give Long Beach State a 1-0 lead.

\nSan Diego State responded in the second, taking advantage of traffic on the bases with a bases-loaded walk and a groundout to score two runs and take a 2-1 advantage. The Dirtbags answered immediately in the bottom half as Reid Montgomery<\/a> laced a standing double down the left field line, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Aaron Perez<\/a> and scored on a sacrifice fly by Conner Stewart<\/a> to even the game at 2-2.

\nAfter both teams traded scoreless innings, Long Beach State regained the lead in the fourth. Aaron Perez<\/a> singled and advanced to second on a throwing error, then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Conner Stewart<\/a>. Murchael Turner<\/a> followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, bringing Perez home and giving the Dirtbags a 3-2 lead.

\nThe Dirtbags added insurance in the fifth when Jake Evans<\/a> launched a solo home run to deep left-center, extending the lead to 4-2.

\nSan Diego State cut into the deficit in the seventh before evening the score in the ninth, capitalizing on a leadoff single that moved to second on a balk. After two flyouts kept the runner in place, a two-out single to shallow left field brought the tying run home to make it 4-4 and force extra innings.

\nBoth teams had chances in the 10th and 11th innings but were unable to capitalize, as the game remained deadlocked at 4-4 heading into the 12th.

\nIn the 12th, San Diego State broke through, capitalizing on a wild pitch and timely hitting to score three runs and take a 7-4 lead. Long Beach State mounted a response in the bottom half as Matt Toomey<\/a> delivered an RBI double to score Enright and cut the deficit to two, but the Dirtbags were unable to complete the comeback, falling 7-5.

\nFreshman right-hander Mason Tymick<\/a> made his first career start, while the bullpen combined for multiple scoreless stretches to keep Long Beach State within striking distance throughout the night.

\nLong Beach State will now open a three-game Big West series against UC Riverside at Bohl Diamond at Blair Field on Friday, with first pitch set for 6:05 p.m.
