(Photo by Denis Poroy\/AP Photo)<\/p>\n<p>The San Diego Padres are nearing a sale to a group led by private equity billionaire Jos\u00e9 Feliciano and his wife Kwanza Jones for a Major League Baseball record-shattering $3.9 billion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/sports\/baseball\/san-diego-padres-sale-b954a4d4\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the Wall Street Journal reported Friday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>An official announcement on the deal is expected Monday or Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The deal follows a new round of bids from four prospective buyers earlier this week that continued pushing the purchase price up from previous reports closer to $3 billion, as <a href=\"https:\/\/timesofsandiego.com\/sports\/2026\/04\/15\/padres-sale-3-5billion-ownership-groups-lacob\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Times of San Diego reported Wednesday<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Feliciano is the co-founder of the investment firm Clearlake Capital, a private equity firm <a href=\"https:\/\/clearlake.com\/about\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">controlling more than $90 billion<\/a> in assets related to over 500 investments.<\/p>\n<p>Feliciano is also part owner of Chelsea FC of the English Premier League, <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/russia-ukraine-putin-roman-abramovich-mlb-4b065cf6c13d9761069e0224472c3dfb\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">following a 2022 sale for $3.2 billion<\/a>. That ownership group is led by Todd Boehly, who is also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/dodgers\/team\/front-office\/todd-boehly\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">part owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The other Padres bidders included groups led by Joe Lacob, the principal owner of the NBA\u2019s Golden State Warriors, the WNBA\u2019s Valkyries and the Chase Center;  Dan Friedkin, who owns three European soccer clubs; and Tom Gores, the owner of Platinum Equities and the NBA\u2019s Pistons.<\/p>\n<p>The previous MLB record for highest sales price is for the Mets, which Steve Cohen purchased for $2.4 billion in 2020. when Steve Cohen purchased the team in 2020. They are currently valued at $3.5 billion. The Dodgers fetched $2.15 billion in 2012 when Guggenheim Baseball Management bought the team.<\/p>\n<p>According to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/justinteitelbaum\/2026\/03\/20\/baseballs-most-valuable-teams-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">recent valuations<\/a>\u00a0by Forbes, the Padres are currently worth $3.1 billion, ranking 10th in the league.
