The invitation: Dive into a pile of museum-supplied bricks and build a boat using only your imagination!<\/p>\n

In an explosion of color, creativity and enthusiasm, participants set out on Saturday, April 11, to design and build ocean-going vessels \u2014 made out of Legos<\/p>\n

The annual event with prizes was hosted by the Los Angeles Maritime Museum in San Pedro and was open to all ages. Participants had to put their creations together in real time in the museum\u2019s exhibit hall at Berth 84 \u2014 Harbor Boulevard at the foot of Sixth Street \u2014 on the Port of Los Angeles waterfront.<\/p>\n

The museum, located in what was San Pedro\u2019s historic 1941 ferry building, hosts the popular contest<\/a> every year.<\/p>\n

The city of Los Angeles facility also offers an array of exhibits<\/a> year-round that can change and rotate.<\/p>\n

Currently, a \u201cWaves of Change\u201d exhibit \u2014 \u201cThe Story of L.A.\u2019s Port\u201d \u2014 provides an interactive timeline tracing the history of the port, from indigenous societies to current events. Included are rare artifacts, photos and interactive touchscreens bringing the story to the present day.<\/p>\n

Other exhibits include those on the historic Japanese fishing village, the Angels Gate Lighthouse, the area\u2019s storied fishing industry, commercial diving and a children\u2019s exhibit.<\/p>\n

A current offering \u2014 \u201cLife at Sea\u201d \u2014 features photos from a recent contest displaying images \u201ctaken of seafarers by seafarers from on board their ships providing an insider\u2019s view of what life at sea is really like.\u201d<\/p>\n

There also is a museum store for gifts and mementos.<\/p>\n

Regular hours are noon to 5 p.m. Wednesdays to Sundays (last entry is 4:30 p.m.). The museum is closed Monday and Tuesday. Admission is $5 for adults, $3 for seniors, and free for children 12 and under.<\/p>\n
