HUNT VALLEY, Md. (TNND) — President Donald Trump called the White House’s recent DoorDash stunt “tacky” on Thursday.

He said during a Las Vegas promotional event for his economic policies that the Monday McDonald’s delivery to the Oval Office, by a woman wearing a “DoorDash Grandma” shirt, wasn’t believable.

“It was a little bit of a – you know, I mean, to be honest it was a little tacky,” Trump said. “You know, they come up with these crazy ideas like McDonald’s.”

The delivery driver, Sharon Simmons, knocked on the door of the Oval Office on Monday with two McDonald’s bags. She and Trump then talked about the tip tax deduction, often referred to as “No Tax on Tips,” that the president enacted through the One Big Beautiful Bill Act last year.

“This doesn’t look staged, does it?” Trump joked to reporters.

The stunt marked the beginning of a week during which the president has tried to shift focus to his fiscal policies and away from the economic consequences of the Iran war, which has tightened Americans’ belts.

Trump noted during his event on Thursday how the stock market has hit record highs during his term and said that higher energy prices have caused “fake inflation.”

“A lot of people thought that inflation would be through the roof and the stock market would crash. Well, we just hit an all-time new stock market, so – it’s amazing,” the president said.

Inflation rose .9% from February to March, mostly because of higher gas prices, the Labor Department said last week. The monthly increase was the largest since the summer of 2022, when prices soared in the aftermath of the pandemic.

The stock market has been resilient throughout Trump’s second term, though, holding strong through some of the president’s most disruptive actions like his start of the U.S.’s war against Iran and the “Liberation Day” tariffs announced last spring.

The economic turmoil has worsened Americans’ mood about their finances. Consumer sentiment in the University of Michigan’s long-running monthly index fell by nearly 11% from March to April, continuing a decline that began with the start of the war.

Survey Director Joanne Hsu noted that economic expectations would likely improve as supply disruptions from the war end and gas prices normalize. Iran’s near shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical Gulf oil passage, has reduced petroleum production and increased gas prices by more than a dollar since the conflict began in late February.
