If you\u2019ve lived in Marin long enough, you\u2019ll remember the open-air marketplace in Marin City that was popular in the 1970s to the mid-1990s. For years, crowds gathered to browse items scattered across blankets, on the ground and in the trunks of vehicles.<\/p>\n
When it closed in 1995 to make way for the Marin Gateway Shopping Center, many people were left disappointed.<\/p>\n
Fast forward to 2026, and the Rotary Club of Marin City will bring back a \u201cnew\u201d Marin City Flea Market just across the street from the old one.<\/p>\n
The new one will be in the parking lot of St. Andrew Presbyterian Church from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 25.<\/p>\n
Organizers are welcoming anyone who wants to sell their crafts, food, vintage items, collectibles, furniture, home goods and \u201cstuff\u201d to apply for a vendor space. Applications for April\u2019s flea market will close on Wednesday or until all spaces are rented.<\/p>\n
The cost for a 10-foot-square space is $40 for general vendors and $50 for food vendors.<\/p>\n
After the inaugural market, it will be held from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. every fourth Saturday of the month outside the church at 101 Donahue St. in Marin City.<\/p>\n
Geoffrey Shaskan, a longtime Greenbrae resident and an avid supporter of Marin City\u2019s community, is the new club\u2019s third member.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe old flea market was really a part of the social world of Marin City, and lots of people would cook and sell things there,\u201d he said. \u201cThis new flea market is going to have 35 spaces, and we hope it\u2019s going to get bigger. We have to get off the ground first.\u201d<\/p>\n
Even though he doesn\u2019t live in Marin City, Shasken\u2019s excited to be in the new Rotary Club of Marin City.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can be a member of a Rotary Club anywhere, and it does this incredible training of leaders,\u201d he said. \u201cI hope we keep expanding and that more people get involved.\u201d<\/p>\n
According to Tami Bell, president-elect of the Rotary Club Marin City, the group has \u201cmet with a number of Marin City community groups and individuals to afford support for community development opportunities in this community.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cRotaries have seven listed goals,\u201d she adds. \u201cOur Rotary Club Marin City centers around community development by promoting business opportunities.\u201d<\/p>\n
So far, plans include beautifying the entrance to Marin City with plants and shrubbery, supporting the rehab of Village Oduduwa senior housing and developing the new Marin City Flea Market.<\/p>\n
The Rotary Club Marin City currently has 18 members and plans to charter in June. It meets from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on the second and fourth Saturdays of the month in the St. Andrew Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall. The annual membership fee is $365.<\/p>\n
