That incident came after authorities said burglars got away with high-value items such as jewelry and cash Saturday night at a home in Toluca Lake.<\/p>\n<p>These incidents are part of a larger break-in problem that has shaken up San Fernando Valley residents over the last year.<\/p>\n<p>Some residents said last summer they were <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-07-31\/encino-neighbors-crime\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">afraid and angry<\/a> after \u201cAmerican Idol\u201d music supervisor Robin Kaye and her rock musician husband, Tom DeLuca, were <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-07-16\/america-idol-executive-slaying-at-encino-home\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">killed in their Encino home<\/a> by an intruder.<\/p>\n<p>What officials are doing about it<\/p>\n<p>The latest in the string of recent burglaries happened after Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass announced Friday that she had directed the Los Angeles Police Department to <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-04-18\/mayor-bass-orders-extra-police-patrols-san-fernando-valley-burglaries\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">increase patrols along Ventura Boulevard<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Four of the previous burglaries occurred within two miles of Ventura Boulevard, with one other occurring about 3\u00bd miles away.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to extra patrols, the LAPD is deploying more vehicles in high-visibility locations; using mobile license plate readers around high-risk burglary areas; using air support to conduct patrols; holding weekly burglary meetings with detectives; and collaborating with specialized divisions such as the Robbery Homicide Division and the Commercial Crimes Division \u201cto investigate high-value loss burglaries\u201d as part of <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/mayor.lacity.gov\/news\/mayor-bass-announces-strategic-deployment-lapd-resources-following-recent-burglaries-ventura\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bass\u2019 directive<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Who could be behind the burglaries<\/p>\n<p>Although police have not determined whether the recent burglaries are connected, they said organized burglary crews are <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-04-19\/san-fernando-valley-burglary-spree-new-homes-targeted\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">systematically targeting homes for luxury goods<\/a> and surveilling properties beforehand with hidden cameras, my colleagues Tracy Brown and Ron-Gong Lin II report.<\/p>\n<p>Several alleged South L.A. gang members were <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2025-08-25\/home-police-arrest\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">arrested in August<\/a> after being accused of burglarizing nearly 100 homes and businesses, mostly on the city\u2019s Westside.<\/p>\n<p>They were believed to be part of a group that called itself the \u201cRich Rollin\u2019 Burglary Crew,\u201d which focused on seizing high-end jewelry, purses and guns, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said last year.<\/p>\n<p>In a meeting last summer with the Sherman Oaks Homeowners Assn., McDonnell said there were two main groups targeting homes in the Encino area: crews from South America \u2014 whose members come on a 90-day visa \u2014 and from South Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>Some South L.A. crews may target homes based on what residents display on social media, he warned.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re showing off Rolexes, fancy bags, fancy cars, this kind of stuff.
