(KBAK/KBFX) — Sunday’s 87 degree high in Bakersfield continued the warming trend that began on Friday. The ridge should hold for one more day, with temperatures likely getting back up in the 80s Monday. 70s could be met up in the mountains again, with a blend of high 70s to low 80s between the Kern River, Indian Wells, and Antelope Valleys.

Meanwhile, a sizeable upper-level low that we have been tracking since its entrance across the northwest Pacific is rotating around west of northcentral California this morning. Embedded vortices (smaller-scale areas of low pressure) are spinning around one another as the overall system shows very little sign of advancing into our region until it’s given the green light, which, according to most models will be Tuesday. As is often the case, there is a pocket of cold air aloft associated with the core of the trough, and a Pacific frontal system extending out to the east and southeast. These are the most favorable zones for rain-band and shower activity. As all of this moves toward the West Coast clouds, and increasingly wet weather will return to the skies of northern, central, and even parts of southern California. Winds will predictably increase, being strongest from the mountains out toward the desert.

KBAK/KBFX

In addition, the cold air in the upper atmosphere will work over warmer conditions at the surface. This should destabilize the airmass enough for isolated to scattered thunderstorms to develop across California’s Central Valley. Similar to the previous active weather setup, locally strong and photogenic to potentially even severe storms are not out of the question Tuesday afternoon and evening. A more notable question is just how far south this possibility will extend. Kern County will have a solid opportunity for showers, with the highest chance of mainly light amounts, and at least some potential for more appreciable totals.

We hope to revisit the rain shower and thunderstorm outlook over the course of the next 24 hours, as more data comes in to work with.

What’s missing from the medium-range forecast info is a big ridge of high pressure, the kind we had a lot of last month. This go around, even after the next system moves through, the progs continue to indicate additional spokes of energy carving out more trough action between the Western US and the Pacific Ocean. Some of the model runs have been speculating about even more active weather opportunities as a result sometime between the following weekend and the week after.

Have a great day!

Comment with Bubbles

BE THE FIRST TO COMMENT

Chief Meteorologist Ilya Neyman

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.
