{"id":277784,"date":"2026-04-21T01:36:53","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T01:36:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/277784\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T01:36:53","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T01:36:53","slug":"officials-warn-distracted-driving-remains-a-major-risk-during-awareness-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/277784\/","title":{"rendered":"Officials warn distracted driving remains a major risk during awareness month"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BAKERSFIELD, Calif.(KBAK\/KBFX) \u2014 As April marks Distracted Driving Awareness Month, officials are reminding drivers that even a momentary lapse in attention behind the wheel can have serious consequences.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll it takes is that one second for a tragedy to happen,\u201d said Officer Jorge Toro, public information officer with CHP Bakersfield.<\/p>\n<p>According to the National Road Safety Foundation, distracted driving continues to be a widespread issue nationwide.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn a recent survey, about 75% of drivers admitted to being on their phone, either texting or talking on their phone while driving,\u201d said David Reich, Director of Public Relations with the National Road Safety Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>Reich says distraction goes beyond just cell phone use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDistraction can be tuning the radio, adjusting your GPS picking up something to drink or something to eat while you&#8217;re driving. Anything that takes your eyes off the road or your mind off the task of driving is a distraction,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The organization estimates distraction may play a role in up to 25 to 30 percent of fatal crashes, though Reich notes it is often underreported.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"KBAK\/KBFX{p}{\/p}\" class=\"ImageEmbed_image__qZBo_\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/16a2d7c2-f3da-4546-8640-f09e8b01e788-large16x9_Sequence_MILLS_HOLIDAYTRAFFIC_0001_frame_12027.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Locally, CHP officers say they are seeing the issue firsthand.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSimply holding the phone in your hand is a violation you don\u2019t have to be talking to anybody, you don\u2019t have to be texting,\u201d Toro said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that distracted driving includes a wide range of behaviors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMany people when they think about distracted driving, they think of only the phone, but it&#8217;s other things like eating, drinking in the car, other passengers\u2014that\u2019s huge,\u201d Toro said.<\/p>\n<p>Officials say even a few seconds of distraction can make a difference.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re going 55 to 60 miles per hour, you\u2019ve pretty much covered the length of a football field,\u201d Toro said. \u201cThink about all the things that can go wrong just by looking down at your phone for three seconds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reich echoed that concern, explaining how quickly a situation can escalate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you&#8217;re at highway speed, three or four or five seconds means you have traveled the distance of a football field just imagine driving that distance with your eyes closed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>CHP Bakersfield recently conducted a 24-hour enforcement operation focused on distracted driving, issuing more than 300 citations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf those, 143 were for distracted driving,\u201d Toro said.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"CHP Bakersfield issued over 600 citations and arrested one person during the Statewide Maximum Enforcement Period earlier this week, focusing on distracted driving. PHOTO: CHP Bakersfield<\/p>\n<p>Nationwide, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports more than 3,000 people were killed in distraction-related crashes in 2024, with hundreds of thousands more injured.<\/p>\n<p>Reich says certain groups\u2014especially teens\u2014are at higher risk.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTeens are less experienced behind the wheel and their brains are not fully developed till we\u2019re somewhere between 19 and 21 or 22 years old,\u201d he said. \u201cThat makes it more dangerous.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Cars We Remember: The Saga of Young Joe, part 2: Distracted driving\" class=\"ImageEmbed_image__qZBo_\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/5f2d006c-c4d6-4f98-bf71-a4a95257b4c2-large16x9_news161229705ep4seoexizrlylb.jpg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Cars We Remember: The Saga of Young Joe, part 2: Distracted driving<\/p>\n<p>He added that passengers can also play a role.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA very big distraction is other people in the car\u2014especially for young people,\u201d Reich said.<\/p>\n<p>Despite widespread awareness, many drivers continue to engage in risky behavior.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople think they can multitask but the reality is it\u2019s not so easy to multitask, especially when the main task at hand is driving safely,\u201d Reich said.<\/p>\n<p>Both experts emphasize that many of these crashes are preventable with simple steps.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPlan ahead set your GPS do all that stuff before you actually start moving,\u201d Reich said. \u201cPut the phone away you have to be disciplined.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA - NOVEMBER 23: Heavy afternoon traffic moves along the I-5 on November 23, 2022 in Los Angeles, California.
