{"id":278117,"date":"2026-04-21T06:34:09","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T06:34:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/278117\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T06:34:09","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T06:34:09","slug":"international-chain-bucks-fresno-fried-chicken-trend-opens-new-restaurant","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/278117\/","title":{"rendered":"International chain bucks Fresno fried chicken trend, opens new restaurant"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Fresno market might have lost a number of fried chicken restaurants in the past year.<\/p>\n<p>But don\u2019t tell the franchise owners of this international chain that there\u2019s a fried chicken crisis in Fresno.<\/p>\n<p>Founded in Korea and specializing in Korean fried chicken, bb.q Chicken is attracting so many customers to its Clovis location that the local franchise owners are opening a second restaurant in Fresno.<\/p>\n<p>The newest bb.q chicken restaurant will be located near Kings Canyon Road and Clovis Avenue in southeast Fresno \u2014 at the former Maria\u2019s Tacos brick-and-mortar location.<\/p>\n<p>The restaurant, at 660 S. Clovis Ave. in Fresno, is set to open around the start of May.<\/p>\n<p>The area\u2019s first bb.q chicken, located just east of Willow Avenue at 701 W. Shaw Ave # 101 in Clovis, has been open since August 2023.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a bit of a different concept than your usual fried chicken place,\u201d said Trace Mathias, a commercial real estate broker who helped the local franchise owners secure the new location. \u201cTheir fried chicken tastes different and it\u2019s been very popular.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Willow (and Shaw) store has been doing outrageous things.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What\u2019s special about bb.q Chicken?<\/p>\n<p>Though bb.q Chicken tastes nothing like the classic 11 herbs and spices at KFC, it does have fried chicken made with methods used in Korea.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"bb.q Chicken is opening a second Fresno-area location near Kings Canyon Road and Clovis Avenue, bringing Korean fried chicken and K-food sides to southeast Fresno.\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1140\" height=\"855\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"standard-img w-full w-full h-auto\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/6a5d83f50b14306e0d3eb7988fa6e67e.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p>bb.q Chicken is opening a second Fresno-area location near Kings Canyon Road and Clovis Avenue, bringing Korean fried chicken and K-food sides to southeast Fresno.<\/p>\n<p> (Bryant-Jon Anteola\/The Fresno Bee)<\/p>\n<p>Its flavors range from traditional \u201cgolden original\u201d to more adventurous options like \u201ccheesling.\u201d It also offers varying levels of spice, as well as different chicken options \u2014 whole chicken, boneless and traditional wings.<\/p>\n<p>There are also K-food options on the menu, such as kimchi fried rice, and different types of sides, such as fried dumplings and pickled radish.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/bbqchicken.com\/about\/#:~:text=Founded%20in%201995%2C%20and%20with%203500+%20locations,and%20healthiest%20Korean%20fried%20chicken%20in%20the\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:bb.q Chicken operates over 3,500 locations worldwide;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">bb.q Chicken operates over 3,500 locations worldwide<\/a> across 57 countries, including more than 200 locations in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Bucking the trend<\/p>\n<p>In some ways, the bb.q Chicken\u2019s second location opening bucks the trend of fried chicken restaurants closing locally.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/news\/local\/article315132441.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:two KFC restaurants \u2014 one in Clovis and another in northwest Fresno \u2014 both abruptly closed;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">two KFC restaurants \u2014 one in Clovis and another in northwest Fresno \u2014 both abruptly closed<\/a> for good.<\/p>\n<p>The two closures were preceded by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/living\/food-drink\/bethany-clough\/article314648222.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:the KFC spot near downtown Fresno closing;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">the KFC spot near downtown Fresno closing<\/a> in February.<\/p>\n<p>And in 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fresnobee.com\/living\/food-drink\/bethany-clough\/article311095135.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:three other KFCs around Fresno;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">three other KFCs around Fresno<\/a> also closed.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.yelp.com\/biz\/kfc-kerman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:a KFC once in Kerman recently shut down;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\">a KFC once in Kerman recently shut down<\/a>. It had received a number of negative reviews in recent months, though it was unclear what impact that had in its closure.<\/p>\n<p>Messages left with JEM Management, which owned those franchises as well as other KFC restaurants in the Fresno area, were not returned.<\/p>\n<p>The longtime Fresno-based franchise operator has been closing fast food joints around the central San Joaquin Valley amid industry and consumer changes.<\/p>\n<p>The KFC brand, however, isn\u2019t the only fried chicken restaurants to close locally in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>A Popeye\u2019s Chicken at First and McKinley avenues closed last year.<\/p>\n<p>Locally owned Chicken Man restaurant closed in 2018 after 51 years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"The Fresno market might have lost a number of fried chicken restaurants in the past year.
