{"id":279431,"date":"2026-04-22T00:40:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T00:40:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/279431\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T00:40:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T00:40:11","slug":"ackerman-midcentury-art-show-at-craft-contemporary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/279431\/","title":{"rendered":"Ackerman Midcentury Art Show at Craft Contemporary"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Craft Contemporary is showing the mosaics, tapestries and wood carvings of the late Culver City artists<\/p>\n<p>Not long after a pair of young Detroit designers visited an exhibition about <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eamesoffice.com\/about\/biography\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.eamesoffice.com\/about\/biography\/\">Charles and Ray Eames<\/a> in 1949, they set their sights on Los Angeles, where that legendary couple had been producing their iconic chairs, textiles and experimental films. \u201cIt really opened our eyes and set the ball rolling,\u201d Jerome Ackerman told the <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/obituaries\/la-me-evelyn-ackerman-20121202-story.html\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/local\/obituaries\/la-me-evelyn-ackerman-20121202-story.html\">Los Angeles Times<\/a> in 2012. \u201cAs we were walking out, I said, \u2018You know, that\u2019s remarkable, what we\u2019ve just seen. The Ackermans set up a studio to create pottery but soon branched out into wood carvings, mosaic art, tapestries and metal work. Their whimsical designs realized in myriad materials are at the center of the exhibition <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.craftcontemporary.org\/exhibitions\/material-curiosity-by-design\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.craftcontemporary.org\/exhibitions\/material-curiosity-by-design\/\">Material Curiosity by Design: Evelyn &amp; Jerome Ackerman at the Craft Contemporary <\/a>through May 10. The vintage Ackerman works are juxtaposed with contemporary art by Porfirio Guti\u00e9rrez, Jolie Ngo, and Vince Skelly, creating a conversation through the decades.<\/p>\n<p>Ackerman art is nothing if not versatile and appealing to the widest range of viewers. Their daughter, Laura, remembers that one of her mother\u2019s tapestries hung above her childhood bed. It is alive with color and energy and leaps off the walls and into your heart. An abstract 1958 mosaic recently sold for $30,000 <a rel=\"noopener noreferrer nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DJ7OYp2PLUe\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DJ7OYp2PLUe\/\">at auction<\/a>. I still keep my eyes peeled at estate sales, hoping that one will slip through the cracks and onto my walls.
