A statewide hotline called “CA vs Hate” has responded to more than 6,800 requests since its launch in 2023. Kevin Kish, director of the California Civil Rights Department, joined KCRA 3 on Tuesday to discuss what the data means and how the program is supporting communities.Reported incidents are continuing to increase, he said. That includes hate crimes, which are criminal acts motivated by someone’s identity, and non-hate crimes like an encounter with hostility motivated by a person’s background. California provides a non-law enforcement hotline. That means the person who calls or reports online is not starting a legal investigation, but is instead being connected to services that they think they need. It could include counseling, support for a child at school, or getting access to legal aid.”The hotline will help connect you to those services where you live,” Kish said. People can report incidents in more than 200 languages over the phone at 1-833-8NO-HATE (1-833-866-4283) or in 15 languages online here. The phone line is open Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. See more coverage of top California stories here | Download our app | Subscribe to our morning newsletter | Find us on YouTube here and subscribe to our channel–KCRA 3’s Daniel Macht contributed to this story.

California’s Civil Rights Department has released new data showing hundreds of hate incidents reported this year and thousands of people seeking help.

A statewide hotline called “CA vs Hate” has responded to more than 6,800 requests since its launch in 2023.

Kevin Kish, director of the California Civil Rights Department, joined KCRA 3 on Tuesday to discuss what the data means and how the program is supporting communities.

Reported incidents are continuing to increase, he said.
