NORTHRIDGE, Calif. \u2013 San Diego State utilized the long ball on Tuesday to key its 4-3 triumph over CSUN in a non-conference game at Robert J. Hiegert Field.<\/p>\n
Zane Kelly<\/a> belted a two-run homer, while Jake Jackson<\/a> added a solo shot to help the Aztecs (23-18) extend their winning streak to four straight and snap a five-game slide against the Matadors (22-17).<\/p>\n SDSU employed three pitchers on the night, as each allowed a run in their respective three-inning stints. After relieving starter Carson Johnson<\/a>, Bryce McKnight<\/a> pitched the middle three frames, yielding four hits without a walk while posting a pair of strikeouts to earn the victory and raise his record to 4-0 on the year.<\/p>\n In addition, Jake Frohn<\/a> tossed the final three innings to collect his first collegiate save, offsetting a pair of hits and a walk with one strikeout.<\/p>\n The Aztecs opened the scoring in the second when Kelly went yard for the second day in a row and third time in his last four starts, blasting a 3-1 pitch over the opposite field fence in left center to bring home Jabin Trosky<\/a>, who led off with a single.<\/p>\n CSUN trimmed the margin in its half of the inning on Xavier Rios\u2019 RBI single with two outs after Trent Abel smacked a double to left and Evan Saito was hit by a pitch. However, Johnson escaped further damage when Saito was forced out on Vaughn Coleman\u2019s tapper to third.<\/p>\n The score remained unchanged until the fifth when Coleman doubled down the left field line and advanced on Andrew Becker\u2019s groundout before crossing the plate on Kyle Panganiban\u2019s single through the left side, knotting the game at 2-2.<\/p>\n The deadlock was short-lived, however, as Jackson led off the sixth with his eighth home run of the season, crushing an 0-1 delivery from Gage McCown over the center field fence to put the Scarlet and Black in front for good at 3-2.<\/p>\n SDSU extended its advantage to 4-2 in the eighth when Anthony Marnell IV<\/a> plated Zach Justice<\/a> with an RBI single.\u00a0 Previously, Justice and Trosky reached on base hits alternating between flyouts.<\/p>\n The Matadors trimmed the margin once again in the bottom of the frame on Abel\u2019s two-out RBI double, knocking in Will Linberg, who laced a two-bagger of his own moments earlier. However, Frohn stranded the tying run after inducing a flyout by Daniel Behrmann shortly thereafter.<\/p>\n CSUN had one last chance to send the game into extra innings after Coleman was struck by a pitch with one out in the ninth. Unfazed, Frohn received a flyout from Becker before freezing Panganiban with a called third strike on a 3-2 pitch to end the game.<\/p>\n The Matadors employed eight pitchers for the night, with McCown (0-1) absorbing the loss after serving up Jackson\u2019s home run in the sixth.
