Los Angeles is the entertainment capital of the world<\/a>,<\/a> and this May, it offers film enthusiasts unparalleled access to cinematic history with a weekend of restored masterpieces. From May 29 to May 31, the UCLA Film & Television Archive is unlocking its vaults for the 22nd biennial UCLA Festival of Preservation. <\/p>\n

Hosted at the Hammer Museum\u2019s Billy Wilder Theater, the three-day event<\/a> showcases 45 meticulously restored titles \u2014 and thanks to an anonymous donor, admission is completely free.<\/p>\n

What to expect at the 2026 Festival<\/p>\n

For cinephiles and history buffs looking for unique things to do in LA this May<\/a>, the festival offers a rare chance to see forgotten silent gems, rescued television broadcasts, and mid-century classics exactly as they were meant to be seen.<\/p>\n

This edition\u2019s lineup includes 11 feature films<\/a>, four television programs, and 30 short works, including world and regional restoration premieres<\/a>, along with introductions by industry experts and film historians.<\/p>\n

Must-see programming highlights<\/p>\n

Friday, May 29: The festival kicks off with Ossie Davis\u2019 \u201cBlack Girl\u201d (1972), paired with \u201c\u2026& Beautiful\u201d (1969) \u2014 the first syndicated TV special for African American audiences, saved from a rare 2-inch videotape.<\/p>\n

Saturday, May 30: Features the visually stunning Argentine film noir \u201cSi muero antes de despertar\u201d (1952) and a new restoration of \u201cThe Magnificent Matador\u201d (1955), starring Oscar-winning actor Anthony Quinn.<\/p>\n

Sunday, May 31: The festival closes with Andr\u00e9 de Toth\u2019s classic \u201cThe Other Love\u201d (1947), featuring the original theatrical ending unseen by audiences since the 1940s.<\/p>\n
