No high school in California has won more championships on the field than Long Beach Poly, which boasts record-high totals of 134 CIF Southern Section and 38 CIF State team titles; just last school year they were named the second-best girls\u2019 sports program in the CIF-SS in the Commissioner\u2019s Cup race. Those marks are in addition to countless individual championships, and more professional athlete alums across all sports than any other high school in America, according to MaxPreps. But the Jackrabbits\u2019 motto is the Home of Scholars and Champions, and this year the school\u2019s students proved that the \u201cScholars\u201d part of that slogan is as true as the \u201cChampions.\u201d<\/p>\n
The CIF-SS recently announced its winners this year for the 38th annual CIF-SS Academic Awards, and the Jackrabbits had four teams win CIF-SS academic team championships, meaning they had the highest team GPA in the Southern Section. The four top teams from Poly were: girls\u2019 golf (4.0 GPA), boys\u2019 tennis (3.86 GPA), boys\u2019 wrestling (3.87 GPA), and girls\u2019 wrestling (3.89 GPA).\u00a0<\/p>\n
Additionally, the Jackrabbits had the second-place finisher for girls\u2019 cross country, as well as 22 teams receive \u201cHonorable Mention\u201d recognition from the CIF-SS: Baseball, boys\u2019 basketball, girls\u2019 basketball, beach volleyball, boys\u2019 cross country, flag football, boys\u2019 golf, boys\u2019 lacrosse, girls\u2019 lacrosse, boys\u2019 soccer, girls\u2019 soccer, softball, boys\u2019 swimming, girls\u2019 swimming, girls\u2019 tennis, boys\u2019 track and field, girls\u2019 track and field, cheer, boys\u2019 volleyball, girls\u2019 volleyball, boys\u2019 water polo, and girls\u2019 water polo.<\/p>\n
Remarkably, of the 29 sports in the CIF-SS Academic Honors program, Poly had 27 teams honored.<\/p>\n
No other Long Beach schools won a top academic honor, but several were podium finishers or honorable mentions. Wilson\u2019s girls\u2019 water polo team was second place, and their beach volleyball team took third place. The Bruins also had 14 honorable mention teams: baseball, boys\u2019 basketball, girls\u2019 basketball, boys\u2019 cross country, girls\u2019 cross country, flag football, boys\u2019 lacrosse, girls\u2019 lacrosse, boys\u2019 soccer, girls\u2019 soccer, softball, boys\u2019 volleyball, girls\u2019 volleyball, and boys\u2019 water polo.<\/p>\n
Lakewood had 21 honorable mention teams: baseball, girls\u2019 basketball, boys\u2019 cross country, girls\u2019 cross country, boys\u2019 golf, girls\u2019 golf, boys\u2019 lacrosse, girls\u2019 lacrosse, boys\u2019 soccer, softball, boys\u2019 swimming, girls\u2019 swimming, boys\u2019 tennis, girls\u2019 tennis, boys\u2019 track and field, girls\u2019 track and field, cheer, boys\u2019 volleyball, girls\u2019 volleyball, boys\u2019 water polo, and girls\u2019 water polo.<\/p>\n
St. Anthony had eight honorable mention programs: boys\u2019 basketball, beach volleyball, girls\u2019 golf, boys\u2019 soccer, softball, girls\u2019 swimming, girls\u2019 track and field, and girls\u2019 volleyball.<\/p>\n
And Millikan had the second-place boys\u2019 wrestling program and third-place girls\u2019 wrestling program, as well as three honorable mentions: boys\u2019 soccer, softball, and girls\u2019 water polo.<\/p>\n
The CIF-SS said that entries came in from more than 2,600 teams this year. The winning teams, including the four from Poly, will be honored at the Angels Blue Jays game on April 20th.<\/p>\n
In addition, schools who chose to submit individual \u201cStudent-Athletes of the Year\u201d had their selections honored. From Long Beach those athletes were:<\/p>\n

Wilson: Keegan Abing (4.0), Kalin Badgley (4.0)<\/p>\n

St. Anthony: Trystan Butardo (4.0), Isabella Mays (4.0)<\/p>\n
