The County of San Diego and San Diego State University continue to work together to inspire the region\u2019s next generation of health and human services professionals. The second annual Health Careers Week held April 13\u201315 at SDSU, connected students and alumni with leaders from the County\u2019s Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA), early career alumni, and SDSU faculty and staff.<\/p>\n

During the three-day event, participants attended workshops, explored career paths in public health, community services, behavioral health and other fields, and built connections with industry professionals.<\/p>\n

County leaders also shared firsthand insight into their daily work of serving communities through health and human services programs.<\/p>\n

\u201cOur field faces so many challenges right now it is important to remind these students their career choice is vital to our communities and will make a difference in people\u2019s lives,\u201d said Elizabeth Hernandez, PH.D., Deputy Chief Administrative Officer of the Health and Human Services Agency. \u201cI can\u2019t wait to see the positive changes this next generation will bring to improve health and well-being in our region.\u201d<\/p>\n

The career fair reinforced the importance of personal connections and professional relationships along with academic achievement. \u00a0Students met with representatives from 10 HHSA departments and 20 health employers, giving them early networking opportunities that often lead to mentorships, internships and future employment.<\/p>\n

The County of San Diego and the Live Well Center for Innovation and Leadership cohosted the event with SDSU\u2019s College of Health and Human Services. The collaboration, formalized in 2022, supports regional efforts to develop and retain diverse, community-rooted talent in the health and human services workforce.<\/p>\n

For Nicole Magnuson, Director of the Live Well Center for Innovation and Leadership, the event\u2019s impact is clear. \u00a0She sees students gain confidence as they transition from the classroom to career.<\/p>\n

\u201cConnecting students to professionals in the health and human services field including the County of San Diego helps them learn, connect, and be inspired,\u201d said Magnuson. \u201cIt also fulfills the County\u2019s commitment to preparing and inspiring the next generation of workers. Ultimately, it\u2019s a win-win for the County, SDSU and the students and alumni we hope will choose County careers now or in the future.\u201d<\/p>\n
