{"id":281294,"date":"2026-04-23T02:08:15","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T02:08:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/281294\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T02:08:15","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T02:08:15","slug":"child-welfare-workers-put-on-leave-in-wake-of-toddlers-death-in-foster-care","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/281294\/","title":{"rendered":"Child Welfare Workers Put on Leave in Wake of Toddler\u2019s Death in Foster Care"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the wake of his death, his family members have lambasted the Department of Family and Children\u2019s Services, saying they plan to sue.<\/p>\n<p>This week, Rosen said he would investigate to determine if anyone else should be held liable in the case, including those at the agency or county.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople in the public and myself as the DA would like to know who is responsible criminally, civilly, morally, ethically, and systemically for what happened in this case, because this is not the first time that this has happened,\u201d Rosen said at a news conference on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I think that we should all be asking questions of county officials at the highest level,\u201d he said. \u201cWhy are horrible and tragic crimes happening to children in the care and custody of the Department of Family and Children\u2019s Services over and over and over again?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leaders at the San Jos\u00e9\/Silicon Valley NAACP have also demanded full investigations into what they called \u201cthe systemic failures of Santa Clara County\u2019s child welfare system\u201d and called for \u201cstructural accountability\u201d up the chain of command.<\/p>\n<p>In an April 20 statement, the civil rights organization said County Executive James Williams, Chief Operating Officer Greta Hansen, County Counsel Tony LoPresti, Social Services Agency Director Daniel Little, and DFCS Director Wendy Kinnear-Rausch all \u201cbear individual and institutional responsibility for the conditions that produced these outcomes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The county, in an emailed response, didn\u2019t address those allegations.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12080616\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/260420-SCCDAANNOUNCEMENT-20-BL-KQED.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"2000\" height=\"1333\"  \/>A crowd listens to District Attorney Jeff Rosen speak outside the Santa Clara County Juvenile Court in San Jos\u00e9 on April 20, 2026, where prosecutors announced charges against a San Jos\u00e9 teen accused of killing his two-year-old foster brother, Jaxon Juarez. (Beth LaBerge\/KQED)<\/p>\n<p>The organization\u2019s complaint builds upon an earlier formal complaint that the organization said it filed with Rosen in July 2025, calling on his office to investigate county leaders in relation to the deaths of Castro and Walker. The NAACP said it did not receive a response.<\/p>\n<p>The organization said the county \u201cpublicly dismissed the NAACP\u2019s complaint as \u2018a distraction,\u2019 stating there was \u2018no basis whatsoever\u2019 to suggest criminal conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The county said that it is \u201cinvestigating every aspect of this horrific tragedy\u201d involving Jaxon and vowed to share its findings publicly when complete.
