<\/p>\nLos Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said Wednesday that she feels optimistic that the Trump administration will send more resources the city needs to recover from the 2025 Palisades Fire after meeting with him and his key advisors in the Oval Office.<\/p>\n
Bass told NBC Los Angeles exclusively Wednesday afternoon that she reiterated to the president that Los Angeles needs financial support from the federal government to rebuild the Pacific Palisades neighborhood not only to fix what’s on the streets but also what’s underneath, such as the effort to underground the electrical. <\/p>\n
“There’s a lot of infrastructure work that needs to be done, and the city cannot afford it,” Bass said. “Getting the resources from the federal government, which is normal, is absolutely essential because our general fund could never withstand the hit, because we are talking about several billion dollars.”<\/p>\n

As Supervisor Kathryn Barger on behalf of the LA County as well as Gov. Newsom collectively work with the Trump administration to get the resources, Bass said Wednesday’s meeting was “positive.\u201d<\/p>\n
Bass added Susie Wiles, the president’s chief of staff, as well as Russell Vought, the director of the U.S. Office of Management and Budget, attended the meeting. <\/p>\n
The mayor, who previously served in Congress for over a decade, has been utilizing her connections and professional relationships to leverage in the rebuilding efforts.<\/p>\n
“We had been working with the administration ever since (Trump) sent EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin out to help us, and we’ve been working closely with him,” Bass said. “Administrator Zeldin was a colleague of mine in the House of Representatives. We worked on very controversial issues together.” <\/p>\n
While Bass and Zeldin do not agree on politics, she said they worked on the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act.<\/p>\n

Despite Trump’s criticism of Bass and how she handles the city matters, the mayor said it’s “imperative” the city and the White House have a line of communication. <\/p>\n
Another way the federal government can help, according to Bass, is FEMA reimbursement. <\/p>\n
When it comes to criticism that the rebuilding process in LA is still sluggish, Bass highlighted it takes more than the city’s push to get homes back up. She said among 2,000 permits issued in the Palisades area, some 450 homes were actively under construction as of Wednesday.<\/p>\n
“We have expedited everything possible. But what we needed most from the president was his advocacy around the insurance industry and the banking industry.”<\/p>\n
Bass said after Trump posted a harsh message about the insurance industry on social media, insurance companies became more responsive. <\/p>\n
“Hopefully that will result in the payments that people need,” the mayor said. <\/p>\n
She also pleaded with the banking industry to extend forbearance, saying it’s hard to pay a mortgage on a vacant lot when people are trying to rebuild. <\/p>\n
“We want those mortgages extended. If you have a 30 year mortgage, then now you have a 32 or 33 year mortgage. So in other words, you don’t have to pay your mortgage while you are rebuilding. It’s added on to the end of your mortgage,” Bass said.<\/p>\n
