Our series is called 70 Years of Service. The Assistance League of Sacramento is helping students and families succeed through proceeds from its thrift store, &#8220;Fabulous Finds on Fulton.&#8221;   &#8220;You browse, you buy, and you make an impact,&#8221; said Shirley Lessiak, a volunteer with the Assistance League of Sacramento.   The store serves as the primary fundraiser for the nonprofit organization, which has been serving Sacramento since 1967.   &#8220;I invite everyone to come and shop here,&#8221; Lessiak said. &#8220;Our goal in assistance is to fill the gaps that other nonprofits and other government agencies can&#8217;t fill.&#8221;The organization runs several programs for people in need, including scholarships for community college students.&#8221;And these students, these people have life difficulties juggling families, jobs, sometimes stability of housing. And they&#8217;re trying to make their lives better,&#8221; Lessiak said.  Over the past two years, the Assistance League has awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships to dozens of students.   &#8220;One of our recipients was a young man living in his car trying to get to school. He received a scholarship, and he now is researching at UC Davis in biochemistry,&#8221; Lessiak said.  The organization also runs other programs, including teddy bear distributions for hospitals and shelters and a career clothing program that helps homeless women prepare for job interviews.
