The Assistance League of Sacramento is helping students and families succeed through proceeds from its thrift store, “Fabulous Finds on Fulton.” “You browse, you buy, and you make an impact,” said Shirley Lessiak, a volunteer with the Assistance League of Sacramento. The store serves as the primary fundraiser for the nonprofit organization, which has been serving Sacramento since 1967. “I invite everyone to come and shop here,” Lessiak said. “Our goal in assistance is to fill the gaps that other nonprofits and other government agencies can’t fill.”The organization runs several programs for people in need, including scholarships for community college students.”And these students, these people have life difficulties juggling families, jobs, sometimes stability of housing. And they’re trying to make their lives better,” Lessiak said. Over the past two years, the Assistance League has awarded more than $200,000 in scholarships to dozens of students. “One of our recipients was a young man living in his car trying to get to school. He received a scholarship, and he now is researching at UC Davis in biochemistry,” Lessiak said. The organization also runs other programs, including teddy bear distributions for hospitals and shelters and a career clothing program that helps homeless women prepare for job interviews.
