BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/KBFX) With the June primary election approaching and ballots set to be mailed to voters early next month, the candidates vying to become California’s next leader are preparing to face off in three televised debates over the next few weeks in a push for last-minute support.

Some local voters said they want candidates to focus on pocketbook issues, including health care costs.

“The biggest concern I have is the cost of health care. I’m a sole proprietor, and my health care is pretty high. I can afford it, but I know many can’t,” one voter said. Asked whether any candidates stood out, she added, “I love Katie Porter because she’s a fighter.”

Others said they want the debates to address a wide range of issues.

“I’m very prolife. I am worried about government spending, fraud that’s being investigated and discovered here in our state. I’m worried about property rights, water rights,” said Erin Rogers, a Glenville local.

Rogers said she has not settled on a candidate yet, adding, “I’m kind of still on the fence between the sheriff and Steve Hilton. I’m not quite certain what way I’m going to go just yet.”

Political consultant Matt Klink, owner and president of Klink Campaigns, said the debates could be especially important for candidates trying to break into the top tier.

“The candidates who are new to the top tier have the most to gain, so Xavier Bacerra,” Klink said.

“He has gained the most with Eric Swalwell’s departure. So, I think having him perform with everyone else is a big deal.”

Klink also cautioned that candidates would need to be careful in how they approach the debates.

“When you try to make a moment, it’s like walking a tight rope without a net. It opens up the possibility that you could screw up royally or open yourself up to attack by everyone else,” Klink said.

BAKERSFIELD, Calif.
