The incident occurred at a townhome complex off Canoas Garden Avenue around 4:23 p.m.<\/p>\n
According to police, a taxi cab driver was traveling forward in the driveway of the complex when it struck the 18-month-old boy, who was walking in front of his home. The driver remained at the scene following the collision.<\/p>\n
Officer Stacie Shih said investigators are still working to determine the circumstances of the crash, including why the taxi was in the complex and whether the driver was attempting to pick up a passenger.<\/p>\n
Investigators do not believe drugs or alcohol were factors in the incident.<\/p>\n
A representative for Airport Taxi Cab Bay Area said the company could not comment on a pending investigation.<\/p>\n

Footage from the scene showed several evidence markers at a home in the Canoas Garden Townhomes complex. It was not clear what the markers indicated. An airport taxi cab was also seen behind police tape.<\/p>\n

Neighbors in the community expressed shock and grief following the tragedy, with at least one resident placing flowers at the scene. Many noted the complex is home to several children and urged drivers to exercise greater caution.<\/p>\n
“In residential areas, we have little children running into streets after toys, balls, things like that,” said resident Jeannie Granados.<\/p>\n
Another neighbor, Carlos Mendoza, said the incident has served as a sobering reminder of the need for increased vigilance in the neighborhood.<\/p>\n
This incident marks San Jose\u2019s 16th fatal collision of the year.<\/p>\n
