{"id":282176,"date":"2026-04-23T15:41:14","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T15:41:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/282176\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T15:41:14","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T15:41:14","slug":"in-a-first-animated-movies-receive-film-tax-credits-in-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/282176\/","title":{"rendered":"In a first, animated movies receive film tax credits in California"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Walt Disney Co.\u2019s \u201cPhineas and Ferb,\u201d \u201cThe Simpsons Movie 2\u201d and an untitled DreamWorks movie are the first animated feature films to receive a California tax credit under the state\u2019s updated incentive program.<\/p>\n<p>The movies are among the 38 projects chosen in the latest round of the production incentive program, the California Film Commission said Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>In total, the productions are expected to employ more than 5,300 cast and crew members, more than 20,800 background actors and generate nearly $800 million in economic activity throughout the state.<\/p>\n<p>Together, the projects will involve 1,019 shoot days, with more than 45% happening outside of the Southern California region.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing the real-world economic impact of this program reach communities across the entire state,\u201d Colleen Bell, director of the California Film Commission, said in a statement. \u201cThat\u2019s what this program is about: creating good-paying jobs and supporting local businesses, while bolstering California\u2019s creative economy in regions across the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In addition to \u201cPhineas and Ferb,\u201d which received $3.5 million in credits, and Disney-owned 20th Century Studios\u2019 \u201cThe Simpsons Movie 2,\u201d which was awarded $21.9 million, other awardees include Netflix\u2019s upcoming reboot of \u201c13 Going on 30\u201d ($10.9 million), a film from Laverne Cox called \u201cBlack is Blue\u201d ($1.3 million) and the Will Ferrell-produced \u201cSelf Help\u201d ($2.6 million).<\/p>\n<p>An untitled Paramount crime thriller received the highest amount \u2014 $25.9 million \u2014 while DreamWorks\u2019 untitled animated film received $24.7 million in credit allocation.<\/p>\n<p>DreamWorks Animation Chief Operating Officer Randy Lake said the tax incentive would have a \u201cmassive impact\u201d on the film\u2019s budget and allow the studio to hire more local talent.<\/p>\n<p>Animated movies and shows became eligible for California\u2019s film and TV tax incentive after the state <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-07-02\/gov-gavin-newsom-signs-bill-increasing-the-cap-for-californias-film-and-tv-tax-credit-program\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bolstered its program last year<\/a>.
