Gavin Newsom\u2019s<\/a> push to increase film production in the state.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalifornia remains the entertainment capital of the world\u00a0\u2014 and we\u2019re making sure it stays that way,\u201d Newsom said in a statement released Thursday, April 23. \u201cOur expanded film and television tax credit is keeping more productions here in the Golden State, creating good-paying jobs and supporting communities statewide.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The projects, which range from smaller independent productions to studio movies such as \u201cThe Simpsons Movie 2,\u201d are the latest to receive financial help from the state since lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/article\/california-film-tv-tax-credit-20397875.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">expanded the Film and Television Tax Credit Program<\/a> from $330 million a year to $750 million in June.<\/p>\n<p>The total tab in this round amounts to $193 million, ranging from the $250,000 awarded to an indie film called \u201cOpen Roof\u201d to the $25.9 million given to an untitled Paramount crime thriller. The productions are expected to spend more than 460 filming days outside Southern California\u2019s traditional 30-mile studio zone and generate nearly $800 million in economic activity.<\/p>\n<p>It is unclear which projects are scheduled to film in the Bay Area, though San Francisco and Marin were among the counties listed as filming locations in Newsom\u2019s announcement.<\/p>\n<p>Twentieth Century Studios\u2019 \u201cThe Simpsons Movie 2\u201d was awarded $21.9 million. Other highlights include the Netflix remake of \u201c13 Going on 30\u201d ($10.9 million), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/movies-tv\/article\/will-and-harper-review-19746476.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Will Ferrell<\/a>-produced \u201cSelf-Help\u201d ($2.6 million), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/article\/clean-slate-trangender-prime-video-20286644.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Laverne Cox<\/a>-starring \u201cBlack Is Blue\u201d ($1.3 million) and Disney Television Animation\u2019s \u201cPhineas and Ferb\u201d ($3.45 million).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re seeing real momentum again in California, and it\u2019s incredibly meaningful to be part of bringing production home and working with the crews who make this industry so special,\u201d Ferrell said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Since the expansion bill was passed, the California Film Commission has approved tax credits for 147 productions, a 53% increase from the year before.
