Tino Cochino brings his comedy tour to Bakersfield<\/p>\n
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) \u2014 Bakersfield has become a popular stopping spot for comedians to test new material in front of a live audience. Gary Owen brings his \u201cNo Hard Feelings\u201d tour to the Fox Theater on April 23. George Lopez will be at the Fox Theater on May 16.<\/p>\n
Radio host and standup comedian Tino Cochino is making a return trip to Bakersfield for an April 25 show at Temblor Brewing Company with his \u201cThe Love Bomb Comedy Tour.\u201d He was part of the lineup when Carlos Mencia rolled into Bakersfield a few months ago.<\/p>\n
When he is not doing standup comedy, Cochino is the host of the top English-speaking Latino radio show in America. It currently airs in over 90 markets across the country with a weekly audience of 5.1 million.<\/p>\n
He has been working in radio since he was a young teen living in Texas, but Cochino loves the immediate feedback he gets when standing in front of an audience. He appreciates the opportunity to see whether the response is good or bad.<\/p>\n
\u201cWith radio, you hope it connects. You do something on the radio, and you hope it connects with comedy. You feel it immediately if it works,\u201d Cochino says. \u201cBakersfield is one of those audiences that just is very authentic, and they can sense your authenticity.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cIf they love it, they love it. And if they don\u2019t, they\u2019ll let you know.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cochino\u2019s show at Temblor will be completely different from when he was in town with Mencia. Material for his \u201cLove Bomb\u201d tour is based on his love life. It ranges from his attempts at love to awkward moments in life.<\/p>\n
There is a reason he has earned the nickname \u201clove bomber.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s basically somebody that gives too much when it comes to gifts and attention, and they almost feel like I\u2019m needy,\u201d Cochino says. \u201cI\u2019ve learned through a ton of therapy and working on myself, the reasoning behind it, and so I ended up forming a tour out of it.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m talking about a divorce that I\u2019ve been going through for the past year and realizing that I\u2019m not the cool young guy anymore. I\u2019m starting to kind of age out of that and not understand what\u2019s going on right now, so definitely the comedy is personal but also observational for sure.\u201d<\/p>\n
Cochino is finding a variety of ways to work out his personal issues. Along with providing fodder for his standup comedy, Cochino has started a new dating podcast. It is a place to talk about dating issues from apps to people.<\/p>\n
He continues to find time to be on the radio as his show is nationally syndicated in 97 cities. He will never give up radio, having landed his first on-air work when he was 16 years old. He would finish school, have dinner while preparing for his show and then host a nightly program at 7 p.m. He kept that job through high school.<\/p>\n
Making people laugh was his real goal.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve wanted to do comedy since before radio. I remember being nine or 10 years old, staying up late to watch \u2018The Tonight Show\u2019 monologue. It is always one of those things I wanted,\u201d Cochino says. \u201cBut I was so intimidated and so afraid to do it. I just finally reached a point where I was just like, I don\u2019t want the what ifs. I want to get out there and just know that even if it doesn\u2019t work, I tried it.\u201d<\/p>\n
And he keeps trying in Bakersfield.<\/p>\n
Scheduled to join Cochino on April 25 will be Calen Genobaga, Lamar Mitchell Jr. and Jorge Ruiz. Cochino points out that because his material deals with a lot of aspects of love, the material is more appropriate for those 18 years and older.<\/p>\n
