I\u2019m\u00a0always blown away by the sheer variety of events happening\u00a0on\u00a0a given week. Whether\u00a0its\u00a0genre-spanning live music, art shows, stage productions, festivals or literary events, Sacramento\u2019s cultural life is shining bright.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

And\u00a0it\u2019s\u00a0another busy week ahead.\u00a0We\u2019ve\u00a0got an independent bookstore crawl, arts and family fun in Elk Grove, a compelling photo show from a Sacramento County Supervisor,\u00a0a timely\u00a0bike swap and a vibrant celebration of Islamic art.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But first:\u00a0I\u2019ve\u00a0got some great news to start this week! Abridged by PBS KVIE has a\u00a0new community calendar<\/a> to help you find and keep track of all the events around our region. National Independent Bookstore Day\u00a0is traditionally held on the last\u00a0Saturday of April.\u00a0This year, the Sacramento area\u00a0is\u00a0leveling up these festivities\u00a0for a full weekend of fun.\u00a0Read the Region<\/a>\u00a0is a bookstore crawl that includes more than a dozen mom-and-pop shops, all the way\u00a0from Elk Grove, Granite Bay and Woodland,\u00a0to the heart of Sacramento and beyond.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Look for opportunities to win prizes and\u00a0special events\u00a0hosted at some shops. These include\u00a0a spring carnival on Sunday with storytelling and face painting at\u00a0The Pleasant Pheasant Bookstore<\/a>\u00a0in Woodland.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Spring has sprung and not only is it the prime season for bike riding but cleaning out the garage as well.\u00a0So, if you\u2019ve got a cruiser or BMX bike gathering cobwebs in the corner, or you\u2019re looking for a low-cost ride, drop by the\u00a0Jibe Bike Swap<\/a>\u00a0this weekend. Bikes for\u00a0donating and\/or selling can be dropped off Friday at the\u00a0North Natomas Aquatic Complex, and the bike swap itself goes\u00a0Sunday.\u00a0Proceeds\u00a0benefit\u00a0Joey\u2019s Food\u00a0Locker,\u00a0a food bank\u00a0located\u00a0at Natomas High School.\u00a0<\/p>\n

If you run into Phil Serna outside of his duties as a Sacramento County Supervisor,\u00a0there\u2019s\u00a0a good chance\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0lugging a\u00a0Hasselblad X2D or Leica SL2\u00a0camera.\u00a0Serna\u2019s spent the last three decades as an avid photographer, from\u00a0documenting\u00a0the slam dancing masses\u00a0and bands\u00a0at Aftershock, to\u00a0capturing Death Valley\u2019s landscape and Mexico City\u2019s urban life.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Head to the Sacramento County Board Chamber Gallery on Wednesday for an opening reception of his\u00a0\u201cLearning to See\u201d<\/a>\u00a0photo exhibition.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0held in conjunction with\u00a0Photography Month Sacramento<\/a> and includes 24 of his photos. If you can\u2019t make the reception, the display runs through Jan. 1, 2027 and is accessible when Sacramento County Board of Supervisors meetings are in session.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In short: Torch Club owner Marina Teixeira has publicly criticized the city of Sacramento for regulations she says \u201cmake it difficult\u201d to operate downtown. Under Sacramento city code, businesses offering live entertainment are subject to specific permitting requirements. Teixeira claimed on social media that frequent visits and fines from the city\u2019s code enforcement department test the ability to stay open. Her post was met with an outpouring of community support.<\/p>\n

A bit more: A meeting this Friday, coordinated by Councilmember Phil Pluckebaum, will bring together code enforcement and Torch Club operators to discuss compliance issues and challenges for the business.<\/p>\n

Something is changing in the bookstore world \u2014 and Sacramento shops are ready for it<\/p>\n

\u201cI think book culture is poised to really catch fire,\u201d one owner said.<\/p>\n

In short: While every day brings challenges for Sacramento\u2019s independent bookstores, a regrowing love for physical books has offered some hope.
Many local shops are leaning into events to compete with online retailers like Amazon.<\/p>\n

A bit more: Owners tend to root for each other, rather than try to compete with other indie shops. To strengthen their bonds, independent bookshops in the area formed an alliance.<\/p>\n
