A man convicted of murder for driving drunk and killing another motorist in a crash on Interstate 5 in Carlsbad was sentenced Thursday to 21 years to life in state prison<\/p>\n
Andrew David Shaw, 46, was found guilty by a Vista Superior Court jury for causing the Oct. 22, 2023, crash that killed Aurora Rodriguez Urrea and injured her adult daughter, who was also riding in the vehicle.<\/p>\n
The California Highway Patrol said Shaw was driving a pickup truck that rear-ended the victim\u2019s vehicle just before 10 p.m. on the southbound side of the freeway near Cannon Road.<\/p>\n
Urrea and her daughter were hospitalized, and Urrea died at a trauma center. Shaw also sustained minor injuries in the crash and was arrested after receiving treatment at a hospital.<\/p>\n
Prosecutors alleged in sentencing documents that Shaw was drinking throughout the day leading up to the crash, and a blood draw taken after the crash showed he had a blood-alcohol level of 0.139%.<\/p>\n
