Chronicle<\/p>\n<p>The loss of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/classical\/article\/michael-tilson-thomas-dead-sf-symphony-17814182.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Michael Tilson Thomas<\/a> is weighing heavily on the Bay Area classical music community and beyond, with many of his friends, collaborators and admirers sharing heartfelt tributes to the conductor online.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The longtime San Francisco Symphony music director died on Wednesday, April 22, nearly five years after he was diagnosed with a brain tumor that doctors later identified as glioblastoma multiforme. He was 81.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMichael Tilson Thomas redefined classical music for the modern era,\u201d California Governor Gavin Newsom posted to X on Thursday, April 23. \u201cMichael was bold, innovative, thoughtful and generous. Sing for them!,\u2019\u201d she commented on a post announcing Thomas\u2019 death shared to his Instagram account on Thursday, April 23.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She collaborated with Thomas and the Symphony on several occasions, and was featured on the orchestra\u2019s Grammy Award-winning recording of Mahler\u2019s Eighth Symphony in 2009.<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThank you maestro for your love and generosity!!! You were an inspiration,\u201d she added.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of others filled the comment section of the post with similarly fond appreciations, many also acknowledging his late husband and business manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/entertainment\/article\/sf-symphony-joshua-robison-dies-mtt-21938594.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Joshua Robison<\/a>, who died Feb. 24 from complications following a fall at their Pacific Heights home. He was 79.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo deeply sad yet greatful (sic) for all the years of mentorship, laughter, love, loyalty and sparkling music making,\u201d Grammy-winning opera mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard commented on Tilson\u2019s Instagram account. \u201cTruly saddened to lose such a bright soul but he is now with his Joshua again and for that I am happy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Leonard and Thomas worked together frequently, notably on the Symphony\u2019s 2021 Grammy Award-winning album \u201cFrom the Diary of Anne Frank\u201d and \u201cMediations of Rilke.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sarah Willis of the Berlin Philharmonic, also shared a brief tribute to Thomas on the platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRIP dear MTT. He stepped down from the role in 2020, in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, and became the orchestras\u2019 music director laureate.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>New World Symphony, the post-graduate orchestral academy in Miami that Thomas established with Ted and Lin Arison in 1987, issued several statements to its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nws.edu\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">website<\/a> in his honor.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMTT was a master of wrestling a dream into reality,\u201d wrote Howard Herring, president and CEO of the organization. \u201cHe coached us all in the process.
