A man was sentenced to 100 years to life in state prison for a 2023 double stabbing in a South of Market encampment that killed one person, the San Francisco District Attorney\u2019s Office said Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Dennis\u00a0Duree, 41, was convicted last year<\/a> of first-degree murder, attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon. His sentencing comes more than two years after he fatally stabbed Brandon Mitchell and injured an unidentified woman in the early morning hours of Dec. 28, 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Prosecutors said\u00a0Duree was acquainted with the two victims, who had set up an encampment near the intersection of Mission and\u00a0Washburn streets, and joined the pair on a mattress on the sidewalk shortly before the stabbing.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHe then began to smoke \u2018dope\u2019 and kept falling asleep and dropping his \u2018dope,\u2019\u201d prosecutors said in a statement. \u201cHe then began repeatedly accusing the victims of taking his dope.\u201d<\/p>\n

Duree then walked away to speak to an \u201cunidentified suspect\u201d in a nearby alley, prosecutors said. When he returned around 5:30 a.m., he fatally stabbed Mitchell and stabbed and injured the other victim.\u00a0<\/p>\n
