{"id":283320,"date":"2026-04-24T05:48:37","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T05:48:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/283320\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T05:48:37","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T05:48:37","slug":"49ers-make-back-to-back-nfl-draft-trades-exit-1st-round-entirely","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/283320\/","title":{"rendered":"49ers make back-to-back NFL Draft trades, exit 1st round entirely"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For the first time in the 10-year run of the Kyle Shanahan and John Lynch era, the <a href=\"https:\/\/sfgate.com\/49ers\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">San Francisco 49ers<\/a> moved out of of first round of the NFL Draft on the night of the draft, thanks to back-to-back trades.<\/p>\n<p>The 49ers traded their first-round pick (No. 27 overall) and a fourth-round pick (No. 138) to the Miami Dolphins for the No. 30 overall pick and a third-round pick at No. 90 overall. But once Pick No. 30 came on the clock, the 49ers made yet another trade, dealing that pick to the New York Jets for Pick No. 33 \u2014 the first pick of the second round \u2014 and a late fifth-round pick (No. 179).<\/p>\n<p>The Niners haven\u2019t made a trade during the draft <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosportstransactions.com\/football\/DraftTrades\/Years\/1988.htm\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to exit the first round<\/a> since 1988, when San Francisco dealt the No. 25 overall pick to the Los Angeles Raiders for their second-round pick at pick No. 33, their fourth-round pick at No. 102 and wide receiver Dokie Williams.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>General manager Lynch telegraphed the move in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_RoT82x3odg\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">a news conference on Monday<\/a>, noting that San Francisco had just six picks in this year\u2019s draft \u2014 a first-round pick, a second-round pick and four picks in the fourth round.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow, I will tell you we don\u2019t have a ton of picks in this draft, so it does make some sense to where, \u2018How can we find some more picks?\u2019\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/live\/_RoT82x3odg?si=fFSce6VCfnTX7XHA&amp;t=534\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Lynch said<\/a>. \u201cAnd we\u2019ll certainly be open to that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The last three times the 49ers went through the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pro-football-reference.com\/teams\/sfo\/draft.htm\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">first round of the draft without a pick<\/a>, they had dealt those picks away in order to move up for a higher selection.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.prosportstransactions.com\/football\/DraftTrades\/Years\/1995.htm\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">In 1995<\/a>, the 49ers traded the No. 30 pick at the end of the first round, plus a third-rounder and fourth-rounder in 1995 and their 1996 first-round pick, to the Cleveland Browns to move up to No. 10. San Francisco\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/sports\/article\/Stokes-shows-his-moves-as-soon-as-he-s-drafted-3156262.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">took wide receiver J.J. Stokes<\/a> after that deal. The other move was the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/49ers\/article\/kyle-shanahan-trey-lance-benched-trade-18329189.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> now-infamous<\/a> Trey Lance trade from 2021, when the 49ers traded their No. 12 pick in the first round, along with first-round picks in 2022 and 2023 and a third-round pick in 2022,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/49ers\/article\/draft-trade-Dolphins-quarterback-Fields-Lance-NFL-16055930.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">to the Miami Dolphins to acquire<\/a> the No. 3 overall pick and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/49ers\/article\/2021-04-Jimmy-Garoppolo-trade-NFL-Draft-Patriots-16136572.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">take Lance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Before Thursday night, the 49ers had traded down twice in the first round since head coach Kyle\u00a0Shanahan and Lynch took over in 2017, but in each instance, they moved back a single selection \u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsportsbayarea.com\/nfl\/how-49ers-bears-2017-trade-looks-with-mitchell-trubisky-option-declined\/1261242\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> from No. 2 to No. 3<\/a> in 2017, and from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/49ers\/article\/49ers-select-TKTKTKTK-with-the-13th-pick-of-the-15222532.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">No. 13 to No. 14<\/a> in 2020.
