This week, Phoong appeared in a campaign ad for Jane Kim, a candidate for California insurance commissioner. In the 41-second video,<\/a> the two women appear next to each other. Kim calls out the insurance industry for denying Californians\u2019 claims; Phoong gives Kim her endorsement.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen something\u2019s wrong, call Anh Phoong,\u201d Kim says, echoing Phoong\u2019s billboard slogan.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd when insurance is looking grim, vote for Jane Kim,\u201d Phoong adds.<\/p>\n

Kim began her political career in San Francisco. She served as president of San Francisco\u2019s Board of Education and later as the city\u2019s District 6 supervisor. She lost a state Senate<\/a> race to Scott Wiener in 2016 and lost the 2018 mayoral election<\/a> to London Breed, following Mayor Ed Lee\u2019s death. Kim also worked on Bernie Sanders\u2019 2020 presidential campaign.<\/p>\n

The idea for the ad, Kim told SFGATE, arrived during a discussion with her team that covered old-school communication tactics.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt started out with a conversation about billboards,\u201d Kim said. \u201cWe were all talking about how inspired we were by Anh Phoong, and then it just kind of clicked. The whole team was like, \u2018This is our dream.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Two months later, the dream came true. Kim and Phoong met at a St. Patrick\u2019s Day gathering in Sacramento. Phoong was on her way to a Kings game, Kim said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSomething I really appreciated about Anh \u2014 this is my first time meeting with her \u2014 is just how supportive she was of seeing women run for leadership, especially women that had different ideas and had big ideas,\u201d Kim told SFGATE.<\/p>\n

They met again at Phoong\u2019s office. Phoong told Kim the story of her law practice<\/a> and sprawling billboard empire; Kim laid out her campaign platform.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Phoong told SFGATE that she left that meeting convinced by Kim\u2019s proposals.<\/p>\n

\u201cI love holding insurance companies responsible: no more delayed claims, no more denied claims,\u201d she said. \u201cYou know, obviously I deal with that in a big spectrum of what I do.\u201d<\/p>\n

California\u2019s primary election is on June 2.
