Authorities in San Bernardino County said the missing 49-year-old woman had fallen 200 feet down a steep mountainous ravine<\/p>\n

Bloodhounds Keva and Naji found the woman, leading to her airlift rescue<\/p>\n

The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department first received a report about a missing 49-year-old woman in Running Springs, Calif., on Saturday, April 18, after her family said she had not come home from a walk.<\/p>\n

According to deputies who spoke with KTLA<\/a> and CBS Los Angeles<\/a>, authorities spent several hours searching for the woman without success. Their first breakthrough in the search came when bloodhounds Keva and Naji stepped in.<\/p>\n

“It was kind of difficult because the family couldn’t necessarily recall where they had last seen her,” Deputy Nathan Baker, a K9 handler, told KTLA.<\/p>\n

After receiving a scent from the missing woman’s pillow, the two dogs made their way down the 9000 block of Old City Creek Road in Running Springs and perked up.<\/p>\n

“[Keva’s] on a 15-foot leash attached to her harness and she’s pulling me down this mountain pretty quickly,” Gabriel Jasso, another deputy sheriff K9 handler, told KTLA.<\/p>\n

“We looked down into the ravine, and that’s when we heard the missing person calling out for help,” he added to CBS.<\/p>\n

Authorities told the outlets that the woman had suffered a medical emergency. She landed in an area full of dense brush, making it hard to spot her.<\/p>\n

“A missing, vulnerable adult with a traumatic brain injury walked away from home and didn’t return. K9 Naji set the track. K9 Keva took it the distance\u2014leading deputies down a half-mile trail and into a steep ravine, leading to the missing person,” the Rancho Cucamonga Police Department, which assisted with the search, wrote on Facebook<\/a> about the hero dogs.<\/p>\n

First responders eventually airlifted the woman to safety, and deputies are now crediting Keva and Naji with saving the woman’s life.<\/p>\n

“These dogs never cease to amaze you in the abilities that they can do,” Nathan Baker, another deputy sheriff K9 handler, told CBS. “Just when you think you’ve got them figured out, they’ll do something that’s just totally out of right field, and just, it’s a super, super rewarding experience to be able to work with one of these dogs.”<\/p>\n

“Our dogs aren’t aggressive in the sense that they want to go bite somebody,” Jasso added. “They want to find the person. The scent, the specific scent that we give them, is the scent that they want to go find so that they get their treat at the end of the trail.”<\/p>\n

The deputies shared that between Keva and Naji, the dogs have a total of 60 successful searches. Jasso joked to CBS that the two are “hide and seek champions.”<\/p>\n

“The validation and just seeing these dogs do the work every single day,” the deputy added to KTLA, “and being able to have a successful ending at the end of a trail is amazing.”<\/p>\n
