{"id":285840,"date":"2026-04-25T19:00:31","date_gmt":"2026-04-25T19:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/285840\/"},"modified":"2026-04-25T19:00:31","modified_gmt":"2026-04-25T19:00:31","slug":"heres-where-california-reservoirs-stand-after-spring-storms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/285840\/","title":{"rendered":"Here&#8217;s where California reservoirs stand after spring storms"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As California heads into its dry season, its major reservoirs are in good shape, with <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/cww.water.ca.gov\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:statewide storage;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">statewide storage<\/a> on Friday estimated to be 20% above normal for this time of year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Robust <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/weather\/article\/california-sf-rain-totals-22203908.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:rainfall;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">rainfall<\/a> in April has given a slight boost in places\u00a0&#8211; especially welcome after an <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/weather-forecast\/article\/california-rain-drought-snowmelt-22091982.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:unusually dry March;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">unusually dry March<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The state&#8217;s overall water outlook remains complicated, however. The <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/climate\/article\/california-snowpack-22159607.php\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:Sierra snowpack;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Sierra snowpack<\/a>, which effectively functions as a frozen reservoir, is far below normal. The Colorado River system, which is critical for Southern California&#8217;s water supply, is also struggling amid a deepening <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usbr.gov\/newsroom\/news-release\/5326\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:drought;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">drought<\/a> and below-average snowfall in the Rocky Mountains.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">&#8220;Reservoir levels have remained mostly above average since 2023, when California saw one of the largest snowpacks on record,&#8221; said Michael Anderson, state climatologist with California&#8217;s Department of Water Resources, by email.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The largest reservoir in California, Shasta Lake, was at <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/cdec.water.ca.gov\/resapp\/RescondMain\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:91% of total capacity;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">91% of total capacity<\/a> through Thursday, which is 9% above its historical average. The reservoir is part of the federally managed Central Valley Project, which primarily supplies water for agriculture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Lake Oroville, the state&#8217;s second-largest reservoir, was at <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/cdec.water.ca.gov\/resapp\/RescondMain\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:96% of total capacity;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">96% of total capacity<\/a> through Thursday, which is 23% above the historical average. The reservoir is a key part of California&#8217;s State Water Project, a state-run system that supplies farms and cities across the state.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Hetch Hetchy Reservoir, which provides water to San Francisco, was at 98% of total capacity through Thursday, or 57% above normal. Total system storage for the <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ebmud.com\/water\/about-your-water\/water-supply\/water-supply-reports\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:East Bay Municipal Utility District;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">East Bay Municipal Utility District<\/a> was 91% full through Thursday, or 11% above average.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Hetch Hetchy in Yosemite National Park, seen here in June 2023, is much fuller than normal right now. Major <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/data.usbr.gov\/visualizations\/reservoir-conditions\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:reservoirs;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">reservoirs<\/a> in the Colorado River system have dangerously low water levels.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Lake Mead, located in Nevada and Arizona, was 32% full as of Wednesday. That&#8217;s just over half of the long-term average for this time of year. The reservoir, which is formed by Hoover Dam, is the largest in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Upstream on the Colorado River, Lake Powell, located in Utah and Arizona and the second-largest reservoir in the country, was 23% full as of Wednesday, or 40% of the historical average for the date.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"820\" height=\"1940\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"rounded-lg\" style=\"color:transparent\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/00622035cc9d1a152fcf8a6e58f07dd6.jpeg\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">The <a data-yga=\"{\" ylinkelement=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usbr.gov\/newsroom\/news-release\/5326\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"elm:link;elmt:article_link;slk:U.S. Bureau of Reclamation;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">U.S. Bureau of Reclamation<\/a> projected that, without major intervention, Lake Powell&#8217;s water levels could drop so low this summer that the Glen Canyon Dam wouldn&#8217;t be able to produce hydroelectric power.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">While snowmelt typically replenishes reservoirs during warmer months, far less relief is expected this year, including in California, after the warm winter thwarted normal snowfall.<\/p>\n<p><img alt=\"Clouds over San Francisco as seen from Treasure Island during heavy rain on April 12.
