A win at home! NJ\/NY Gotham FC<\/a> not only scored their first goals at Sports Illustrated Stadium, but also earned their first win of 2026 at home over Bay FC.<\/a> The 3-0 win was a complete performance<\/a> over 90 minutes and, by far, their strongest of 2026. The goalscoring issues that plagued<\/a> the Bats in the opening five games felt like a distant memory, not just by the final whistle but at halftime, with all three goals scored in the first half.<\/p>\n

The big story going into this match was the extensive injury report<\/a> that saw only two healthy defenders available for Saturday’s game. This meant Midge Purce and Guro Reiten, who made her Gotham FC<\/a> debut, had to play at fullback for the fixture despite being natural wingers.<\/p>\n

Then, Bay’s up-and-down start to the season continued as they were held scoreless for the second game in a row after winning two of their opening three matches. It’s a young squad that was missing Alex Pfeiffer and had Racheal Kundananji only available off the bench.<\/p>\n

Now, Gotham moved into the eighth and final playoff spot at the time of writing, with six more games to go this weekend. So while there is a chance they fall out of that spot come Sunday night, they are right back in action on Wednesday<\/a> against Chicago Stars FC to try and move even further up the table.<\/p>\n

An emphatic home victory for Gotham FC<\/p>\n

Despite the huge number of injuries and changes that were needed because of them, Gotham FC<\/a> came out of the gates flying. They managed to continuously pour on the pressure in the opening minutes of the game, forcing Bay goalkeeper Jordan Silkowitz into making multiple great saves.<\/p>\n

The dam finally broke in the 20th minute when some great play down the right from Jordynn Dudley<\/a> and Rose Lavelle<\/a> caused a scramble in Bay’s box. As a result, an own goal was scored by Karlie Lema. The NJ\/NY side continued to pressure afterward, with the visitors seemingly letting them have the freedom to get down both wings.<\/p>\n

Gotham doubled their lead in the 40th minute when some nifty footwork from Dudley down the left wing allowed her to create enough space to find Lavelle in the box. And despite scuffing her shot, she managed to get enough on it to find the back of the net. This was Lavelle’s first goal of 2026 and Dudley’s first assist of her professional career.<\/p>\n

Then, the team scored the third goal of the half when Lavelle was chopped down in the box for a penalty. Esther Gonz\u00e1lez stepped up and buried it to give Gotham an emphatic 3-0 lead going into halftime.<\/p>\n

Coming out of halftime, Reiten’s NWSL<\/a> debut came to an end as she was replaced by Andrea Kitahata. All things considered, playing at left-back and not joining up with the team until a few days ago, it was a pretty successful debut for Reiten.<\/p>\n

The second half saw Gotham move into cruise control and maintain their three-goal lead throughout, with Bay FC<\/a> not registering their first shot of the game until the 59th minute.<\/p>\n

Some notable parts of the second half saw Tierna Davidson subbed out in the 66th minute, bringing an end to her first start of 2026. Sofia Cook came on in her place, with her moving into midfield and Jaelin Howell dropping into Davidson’s spot in the backline. And Mak Whitham replaced Dudley in the 77th minute after a fantastic performance from the rookie, and the 15-year-old received her first minutes of the season.<\/p>\n

The match ended 3-0 and was by far and away Gotham’s best performance of 2026. The win was needed not just for the sake of the standings but also for team morale after what was a disappointing and frustrating opening five games of the NWSL<\/a> season. This is very much a result the club can build on, given the next three matches are against the current bottom three teams in the standings.<\/p>\n

Bay FC’s early East Coast kickoff after traveling from out west and then missing their two best players from the start could have helped the NJ\/NY side. But with that being said, there was a sharpness and a push to take charge of the match that wasn’t really present in the early-season matches.<\/p>\n

Gone was the passiveness and almost sort of unwillingness to take the initiative that was seen earlier in the season, and what fans saw was really this club playing up to their fullest potential, and even if they can get to 80% of this in subsequent games, then Gotham FC<\/a> will be just fine and should end up winning a lot of games.<\/p>\n
